The Armory Guards would like to announce that we are forming a Federal Campaigner Company for the Battle of Tunnel Hill September 7-9, 2007. The event will be similar to this year’s Resaca event, very laid back, and fun. We are going to portray Company K of the 7th Ohio again. We will be falling in again with our pards in the GVB. Yes this is a mainstream event, but we will be correctly portraying soldiers as we did with the Resaca event. We want to focus on good solid school of the soldier, school of the company, and skirmish drill. (Hint: this will be good practice for the Chickamauga Living History event and next year’s Pickett’s Mill event) We will be using Casey’s drill book. So participants please read over the manual and come prepared. Kiev Thomason will be company commander for the weekend with other Armory Guards folks making up the core group of the company. There will be a small $5 fee for rations, but there is no admission fee, but the Tunnel Hill Heritage Center greatly appreciates any and all donations. So I’ll be asking for individual donations to turn in at the end of the event.

The Heritage Center’s website: http://www.tunnelhillheritagecenter.com/battle.htm

Information on the 7th Ohio from the Resaca event can be found here: http://tandpcorbin.home.mindspring.com/resaca2007/index.htm

The $5 for the rations will act as our registration process as well. Please send the $5 to

Herb Coats
1385 Holly Lake Circle
Snellville, Ga 30078

By doing this we can plan to have enough food for all who sign up with our company. I will be posting more information later this week about the camping spot and other information that comes along.

Please look over the guidelines below and follow them accordingly. Although this is a mainstream event, we want correct gear and good attitudes. If you have any questions about the guidelines, the event itself, or anything else please feel free to email me at

Gents,

Sorry this is so late, but if any of you would like to come down for our company we would love to have you! The above post from Herb has all the info for the site and the event. The event will be similar to Resaca. We will have a good time with each other and drill a good bit both at the company and battalion level. This is a good chance to get some practice in for future events such as Chickamauga, Outpost, and Pickett's Mill/New Hope church. After the reviews from Resaca, I hope some of you will think about joining up. It will be my first time as captain on the field. You can all come and pick on me:wink_smil

Thanks!

If it is anything like Resaca, it will be great. I can't say enough about the leadership at Resaca. I would love to fall in, but I my wife wants me for that weekend for some reason. Looks like the Armory Guards are getting a trend started and improving some good events with presence. Looking forward to
Outpost.
Good luck gents,

Phil,

If you haven't ever been to Tunnel Hill, or simply haven't been to the site in a while, take some time to go into the tunnel itself for a good look around. A few years ago, we had a nice tour during the restoration work, and learned a little about the construction of the tunnel. If you look closely, you'll notice the brick isn't actually brick in a number of places. On the outside, the works are still readily visible (at least they were in 2001), and weren't all that difficult to access.

Development pressures being what they are....well, I don't need to finish that sentence, but there is still a heck of a lot to see and do in that corner of Georgia.

I will be there representing "The Watchdog" by myself, though perhaps I will have a military escort. Bill Christen is doing the same at the Boonsboro, Maryland event. I will try to look you miscreants up. You should not be hard to find.

I was at Tunnel Hill this past weekend. You fellows looked GOOD. I had conversations with several of you. I was the older reb with the mostly white goatie! My son and I were both VERY impressed with not only your equipage but the way you carried yourselves. We have a long way to go to measure up. BUT.. you fellows were an education to everyone who observed you.

We campaign camped outselves. Didn't even come down with 'john browns march' from the salt pork LOL

I haven't been out to the field since Bank's Grand Retreat in March, so it was good to get my kit out and work on my field skills, practice drill and enjoy some campfire time.

Sometimes going to an event like this as a campaigner adjunct allows you to get organized before a big Tier 1 or 2 event or to get trained up. There was more Federals than Confederates on Saturday and one company had to switch to gray! The Union fought well in the 95 degree heat and not once did the ambulance roll out for a heat casualty, that I could see. We stayed well hydrated on the campaigner side.

I was really impressed with Sunday's battle and the yelling and whooping was terrific, it had a good feel to it.

Thanks for the comments Ronnie, here are a few pictures from the weekend.

Great photo's Greg, I really like the one of us resting. I'm in the background taking advantage of the hospitality of young Caleb Benefield's girlfriend.

As I suspected, your camp was not hard to find. Kudos to Herb Coats. After what I saw this weekend at Tunnel Hill my overall morale is much improved. The entire event was raised up by virtue of that one decent camp being there. It was palpable, you could feel it. The results on the field were encouraging. This is how it can be when things go right and it works. As long as there are a few folks with their heads screwed on straight, like you boys in attendance there...the entire hobby is brought up a notch. And Ross Lamoreaux in his tam o'shanter, now that is going to be an image that is hard to shake.

There were good impressions, knowledgable, well drilled soldiers w/ some good looking muskets in there. I checked out "the stacks" and you could still smell the boiled linseed oil over the scent of whatever putrid offal was being eaten in camp. Some good works in progress too, by the do-it-yourself boys. I like to see the personal projects vs. all commercial on accuracy modifications. The sutlers area is usually a depressing place, but there was a new field merchant (Robert E Collett "Historic Gear") at Tunnel Hill selling Columbia Rifles Research Compendium 2nd Ed, some NJ ************ forage caps and lined JT Martin sacks.

Hope to see some of you boys at Mill Springs, Kentucky. Stop by the Watchdog tent for a handshake and a lemonade.

Out of chaos comes leisure, and some good times. Thanks to all who came ready and helped this old orderly out by putting in the time on the drillfield, acted like soldiers, and set an example for all to follow. I'm glad I got to meet Howard Davis, Kirby Smith, and Greg Dease and want to thank Garrett Silliman, Gary Graffweg, and Jordan Roberts for a fine job as NCO's. It can be somewhat difficult at times putting together several messes and units and expect them to act like a veteran company with just a few minutes to put it together, but once again, this group did indeed get it. With troops from the Armory Guards, 21st Ohio, the ol' 1st GA Regulars, and assorted other messes and independants, the cooperation was instant and constant. Kiev and Coatsy fought the good fight for us with the headquarters types and let us go out and run. "Ohio, Ohio, Ohio!" Attached is one of Wendell Decker's works from this weekend, with a special thanks to the dude who sold me the killer carpet slippers on this model's feet

I would like to say thanks for the kind words from the folks who were there. The whole event was good from our end for the most part.We did what we came to do....Drill!!!The Fight was good at times and not so good at others. You men made it very easy to be your CO.Everyone pulled their share and then some.I hope those that can come to the Jonesboro L.H. area at the Jonesboro Battle and help support the Armory Guards and this time Captain Herb Coats.

Thanks Guys it was fun!

Greg.... I felt tired on Sunday, but man those pictures just let me know how tired I REALLY was.

To all that came out and fell in with the Amory Guards "US CAMPAINGERS" (as the sign said) thanks! Thanks to Kiev and Co for getting the dinner together on Saturday and Haird and Robby for taking care of breakfast on Sunday. Sorry I wasn't hungry for lunch, but the dust I ate all weekend caught up so no need for food. And somehow I missed the pie delivery. The world is comign to an end!

It was a stream event, but the battalion drill on Saturday was one of the better ones that I've been a part of. Yes even going through the tall grass near the "Roark's Drift" buildings was fun.
