Gordon County Marine killed in Iraq
11/10/06
Cody Warren
Cody Warren, a 2005 graduate of Gordon Central High School, was killed Thursday in Iraq, school officials said.
Warren, 19, was a member of Battery M, 3rd Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment, a reserve unit based in Chattanooga.
The Marine Reserve unit said it could not release any information about Warren's death, but friends of the Marine said he was killed by sniper fire.
“Cody was one of ours,” said Mike Stanton, county school superintendent. “His service and his sacrifice become personal because we all know him and his family.”
Stanton said Warren’s mother, Robin Patterson of Resaca, is a Gordon County school bus driver, and he has siblings still at GCHS. He father is James Warren of Marietta.
A memorial service for Cody Warren has been scheduled for 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 13 at the memorial fountain in front of Gordon Central High School
Neal Crawford, GCHS band director, said Warren was an important part of the Blue Wave Marching Band.
“He was our drum major his junior and senior years and also played alto sax,” Crawford said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better drum major. He was a tremendous leader.”
Warren also sang in the Gordon Central Chorale and Tonal Combustion, the schools a capella group, and performed in the school’s One Act play competition.
Crawford said the mood at the school was somber as news of Warren’s death spread Friday morning.
“The band members who are juniors and seniors here now all knew Cody,” Crawford said. “I told the kids this morning that when you hear about things like this on the news, it may sting, but when it’s someone you know it makes it real.”

Our deepest respects and sympathies. I know he will be missed, and be assured, that when he reports at Heaven's gate, he will be well admitted, as he has served his time in hell.

Absolutely sickening.....I'm at a loss for both words of woe and sagacity to explain the loss of life we are presently dealing with over there.
One day devoted to our fallen doesn't begin to compensate, but God bless them all just the same on this, Veteren's Day.

Semper Fi Brother. May God give your family the strength that they need in thier time of sorrow. You are a hero and a patriot. When we meet in the hereafter with all of our brothers we can drink a toast to the great deeds that men like you have done for your country. God, I pray that you look after the soul of our brother Cody and of the many others who have lost thier lives in this fight. Our world is a lesser place without you.

Folks,
Even after several days after reading about this fine young boy, I can not help but be sad. Sad for his soul, his family, and the the many...many before him and the wounded. I guess since Veterans Day just occured, and Thanksgiving is drawing near, I just can't help but think that the two (Veterans / Thanksgiving Day) were meant to be in the same month.
Reading about this boy and seeing his face reminds me of a sin I committed while "over there". I purposley did not remember "the names" and look at "the faces" of the ones we treated. Seeing this boys face reminds me that we must and I mean must, pray for PEACE and to an end to this war.

Dale:
And let's not forget the 231st Anniversary of the Marine Corps that was celebrated on Friday, November 10, 2006.
You are correct that it is very, very sad. It is also very, very sad that this "war" has become what it has, a status quo situation which is again taking American lives at extremely high levels I note that we have now been at "war" in Iraq longer than we were involved in WWII.
My prayers and thoughts go to the family of a fellow Marine and fellow Georgian.

At a very young age. Cody joined my Civil War re-enactment unit. He had a love of history and heritage. He was an exceptional young man. There will be one vacant chair around our night time campfires.
Cody Warren, who reenacted with the 28th Georgia from 2002-2005, was killed by a sniper in Iraq on November 9, 2006. He was nineteen. Cody joined the Marines in 2005 and was a member of Battery M, 3rd Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment. Cody was a 2005 graduate of Gordon County High School, where he was the drum major in the marching band his junior and senior year. Starting in 2002, he reenacted with the 28th Georgia at first as a fifer with our field music and then later joined the ranks as a rifleman when he was old enough to carry a musket. Some will remember him as the nice young man who fell in with us, while others will remember his stirring rendition of Garry Owen that he played on his fife. As Cody once honored the heroes of the American Civil War, we now honor him. We are deeply saddened and shocked by his untimely passing, but his last full measure of devotion to his country is an inspiration to us all. Thank you, Cody, for your service and your friendship. We salute you and we will never forget.

After talking with members of my unit, Co A, 2nd GA Sharpshooters, most of whom were in the 28th at one time, we still feel a tie to them and to their members, and have elected to tie a black streamer to our camp colors for a year in Cody's honor. Semper Fi Marine....

I like this idea. I'm not sure we shouldn't all do the same, no matter who doesn't come home. The truth is they are all really a part of the collective military family we strive to represent, and among whom we count many actual members, living and dead. It is something worth considering.

I'm very sorry for Cody's family.
Earlier this year a kid who I graduated high schools with was killed in Iraq, he was a Marine as well.
I didn't know him well, infact he probably teased me a couple times, but it still left me in shock for a couple days.

When I do school talks I always try to use stories to relate to the young audience just how young the Civil War soldier was. Additionally, I also make the statement that "so much was lost, each man had a contribution to society to make...I'm convinced that there was more to thier life than just the sacrifice they made for our country. Was the cure for cancer lost ?"
Think about it. What have we lost as a result of the loss of a young man like Cody ? We'll never know, but our society must appreciate the sacrifice of his life, so that we as a people will always be willing to lay down our "contributions" to society, in order to preserve it.
I'll be in tought of Cody and in prayer for his family this weekend.
He's in a better place now.

I have received many message's from the members of this board. It seems Cody, touched many that he never got the chance to meet in person. Most want to express their condolences of sympathy to the family. One suggestion is to start a seperate thread. It would be used like a visitation book at the funeral home. Based on your opinions. I can print it out and present it to the family ? Or leave it in the presentation book.
I will start a seperate thread. You may leave your thoughts to the family in that thread. I will print it out and present it to the family at the service.

Final post:
The roads were lined on both sides for miles today. Thousands turned out to hold the American Flag high. And to give a final salute to our fallen Marine.
God bless this country and our troops.

This man's sacrifice is one I hope that thousands of men (and women) gather around in 150 years to remember. It hits home, esp. when the young man is from so close to home (I am I native of Catoosa and spent many years in Floyd). Those who knew him must feel fortunate to have known him and sad to lose him.
Thanks you Cody,

I keep coming back to this thread and looking on the face of that beautiful human being and feeling so heartsick.
On this Thanksgiving, I thank God for young men like Cody and so many others. I remember his family and friends in my prayers and imagine the pain caused by the losses of loved ones in all wars, including the one we strive to portray honorably.
God Bless Cody, his family and all who serve.
May he never be forgotten.

Some of the things that struck me most. How many people Cody touched, but never met in person. The PGR (Patriot Guard Riders)website thread went to 9 pages in condolences. Several other website threads did the same. Several of us joined the PGR flag line. 130 members stood in line, holding the American flag to the entrance of the church. As cold a day as it was. No one mentioned or complained of the cold. Everyone stayed in the Flag line 1 1/2 hours. Complete silence fell over the area, at first glimpse of the procession. The only sound was the flags whipping in the wind. Just enough for them to unfurl to full glory.
The services were held in the largest church in town. Easily 800 people in attendence. Codys pastor said, "There was no way their small church could have held everyone." Cody was very active in his church. Cody also excelled in his high school and civilian activities. A bagpipe player played the USMC hymn, as the service started in the church. He slowly marched out and the hymn faded into the distance. Several songs were performed by the choir and
others. The entire service was uplifting in spirit. A real celebration of Codys short life.
People lined up 2-3 deep for miles through Calhoun. American flags held high. Along the entire route (40 miles) people were on the overpasses of the interstate and along the roadsides.
I noticed several of the Marines, at the cemetary, overcome with emotion. A 21 gun salute and TAPS performed by the USMC. The flag was folded and presented to the family. 19 white doves were live released at the cemetary. One each, for each year of Codys life. They contined to fly overhead, even as we left.
I am in awe, of Codys achievements, in such a short life. He started honoring the men of the Civil War at age 15. He excelled in the high school band and music, church activities, and civilian duties. He was well on the way to doing the same in the USMC and life. He packed more into 19 short years than most do in a lifetime.
He had a page on myspace. It showed the typical interest in girls and music. But, mosty pictures of him in USMC uniform. Along with fishing, his dog, etc...One question was, "Have you ever been in love ?", His reply, "Once" that one really got to me. He never got the chance to have his own house, family and things that make life great.
God needed another exceptional soldier in heaven. I have no doubt. He is serving there now.
Forever in our memory:
LCPL Kristopher Cody Warren
