Greetings:

It is time to vote for the October Cover of the Authentic Campaigner. Please vote for the image that you feel is the most authentic. If your image is one of the final three, we are requiring that you provide some background information about the inspiration or impression for the image in this thread.

We encourage conversation about the impressions portrayed as well as any documentation that might be available that would add to the discussion. The intent of the selection process is to determine why you think one image is superior to another.

I submitted Image # 1 which was taken by Robert Szabo for the Kansas-Missouri Border Wars (1854 thru 1861) documentary called "Bad Blood." The gentlemen in the image are messmates of mine; Dave Gant and TJ Bruegger.

Wide Awake Films & KCPTV (Kansas City Public Television) made the documentary and it aired back in March.

Many of us from my mess participated in the production. Dave & TJ sat for this image and it was used extensively to promote the documentary. Whether they are Kansans or Missouri Border ruffians, well I will leave that to the viewer's imagination.

Michael:

Thanks for the background information about your image. We'd like to hear from the other two submissions as well.

All three are wonderful images, but I have to go with number 2-RIP Ben Lane and thanks.-ELI GEERY

What I like about the image: I love the composition, the point of focus is low center and it gradually goes out of focus and eventually ends in collodian swirling at the edges, which adds just a touch of irony, as that has to be much like the emotions that the subjects would have felt(had it been original). The beaten but defiant looks on the faces of the captured confederates and the blurry federal lines in the background also tells the story of 5 young men left behind by war. Finally the federal guard, intently watching the distant action unfold behind them as if he is not certain how it will end. This could tell the story of any 5 soldiers at any late fall battle in the East.-ELI GEERY

Image three consists of the Armory Guards and friends portraying the 7th Ohio, Sherman's Boys for those of you not in the know. We were going for the Western Federal "Those Guys" attitude, and as you can see it worked. I think we did some justice to the boys of the original 7th.

On a funny side note, our Captain, Kiev Thomason, has got the "Joe Hooker" sideburns going and many of our pards commented on how Kiev resembled old Joe. It is fitting since the 7th Ohio was in the XX Corps during the Atlanta Campaign.

Let's just say that this same type of "attitude" is what the Federals should be into at "Bummers!":wink_smil

This isn't a "I don't know anything about art but I know what I like" thread. A little substance would be greatly appreciated. Tell us what you think the strong points of the images are but please don't waste our time with comments like these:

Eric has suggested many times that...We encourage conversation about the impressions portrayed as well as any documentation that might be available that would add to the discussion. The intent of the selection process is to determine why you think one image is superior to another.

Okay then, fair enough.

Image #1-
"I feel this photograph is the best choice based upon the realism of the pose for the said background/explanation of the photograph. The hair, choice of clothing, and facial expressions are particularly of note in this respect. I also like the fact that the image lets the viewer make his own mind up as to the alliegiance of the portrayed combatants."

Okay. Image 1 is amazing. You could put that in a study of original images and I would never look twice. That being said, I've seen it a lot and I loved the 2nd image. Those johnnies just look mad. They fought and ended up prisoners. I also like the depth of the 2nd image. There is the guard and then what seems to be a big old battalion in the deep background. It has the look and puts in front of me an image that I wish there were more original images of. Does that make sense? This was a tough month to vote on for sure.

Best,
Andrew

It was a tough choice between #1 and #2, but I am going to go with # 1. To me it is a image perfect for the cover image.

My hat is off to the fine men who created these images. The men in each of the images is also to be commended for their study into the subject matter they are depicting. As far as the pose of the men and the originality of the subject matter, I like and choose picture No. 2.

I have seen image 1 several times, and was amazed at how great it looked.
I vote for #1:D

I like # 1 image. I think that it has that "rough" image. It looks like those boys have seen alot of hard times, like, fighting and dying. This image has that " History Book" look to it.

I believe that it's a toss up between #1 and #2, But I believe #2 has a slight edge and it gets my vote.

I voted for No. 2 because there really aren't many prisoner photos that are done. I also like how there is a larger body of troops maneuvering in the background. And, I'm a sucker for ANV and AotP impressions.:wink_smil

Here is the image that I almost posted, and one that you never really see depicted here. It ties in with the image I did submit; showing the fatal end of the two young gentlemen. Pictured from left to right are Dan Hadley (Tater Mess), Dave Gant (Tater Mess), Mike Bubb (Skulker's Mess), TJ Bruegger (Tater Mess), and Greg Higginbotham (Holmes Brigade).
