I'm thinking about making a scarf while in winter quarters ,but I need to know where to pick up 100% Virgin wool yarn with natural dyes? Brown, gray, and plain are the colors I'm looking for. Thank you.

I would suggest looking up Marr Haven Farm (search for them online, they have a nice website). They sell excellent Merino-Rambouillet 100% wool yarn (natural greys and browns--not dyed), from sheep they raise. I usually get their cleaned/carded wool and spin it myself. Their yarn however is all spun on a mule spinner, which replicates a hand-spun product very nicely.

Any other places I can get 100% virgin wool yarn with natural dyes or no dyes? Thank you.

From me--natural wool or period dyes. Send me a private message with the quantities you have in mind, and I may even have an appropriate amount of handspun on a treadle wheel.

While on the same subject, are there any good sources for "(al)ready made" period scarves? (unfortuantly hand knitting is not my thing).

And while I'm on the subject, those brown scarves (w/ tan stripe) in "Gods & Generals" looked interesting. Were those made from cut-down blankets?
I'd like to make one like those, any suggestions?

Thanks.

Skilletlicker has 'em. Look under Citizens' Articles. I think I've seen them elsewhere also, but that's one place where I know I've seen them. (Edit here... I don't mean those brown scarves with stripes, just scarves)

Dear Sir:

Did the strips run horizontally across the scarf? Or did they run vertically the length of the scarf? I don't remember seeing these, what part of the movie were they in?

Thanks

Hello Karin,
they ran vertically at the ends of the scarves. They can be seen on some of the Confederate troops during the street battle in Fredericksburg; & in the winter camp scene (i.e. execution of deserters) worn by one of Jackson's adjutants.

Thanks,

The movie was so bad I fell asleep though the whole movie. So I did not see that part of the movie. :)

Thanks, I'd missed that when I saw the movie, will go rent it and see what you're talking about. I agree with the poster who wrote that he fell asleep. I was so disappointed by this movie -- I told all my non-reenating friends that if I was bored by this movie (who can be reliably entertained with much minutea about the war) I was certain they would be as well.

I'll go check it out,

Folks:

On the "Military Authenticity Discussion" there is a thread entitled "Sweaters." In the course of the discussion, Miss Vicki Betts has put up several long quotes from a dissertation on the textiles found on the Bertram, including the dimensions of several scarves that were found.

Go check it out!
