Gettysburg National Military Park

Hosted by: The Living History Guild (Member-Potomac Legion)

You are invited to participate in a memorial march honoring units engaged in operations July 3, 1863 in the vicinity of Big Round Top. Additional information will be forwarded to interested persons upon request. Slots are limited to the first 50 and are open to all Potomac Legion member units. Non PL members wishing to attend may request participation and be sponsored by a PL member. Once the maximum number of participants is reached, your name will be placed on a wait list and you will be notified in order of requests received to fill openings caused by cancellations.

This year the march is slightly less than 2 miles via the road network and in addition there are two foot trails in the vicinity of Big Round Top we will be traversing. The trails are fair, but there may be some blowdowns we will have to work around. Our activities will finish about the same time the parade begins downtown and we currently have no plans to join it

Previous march routes:
• Culp’s Hill to the Peach Orchard (5 miles)
• Reynolds Avenue to Barlow’s Knoll with emphasis on the artillery actions (2.7 miles)
• Peach Orchard, Wheatfield, Devils Den and Little Round Top (3.6 miles)
• Culp’s & Cemetery Hills (3.2 miles)

If you are interested in being a volunteer narrator and doing a battle history for one of the units listed below, please contact Doug Oakes oldsoldier51@yahoo.com. A maximum of 10 units will be scheduled in order to allow us to finish the march prior to the expiration of our permit.

Unit
18th Pennsylvania Cavalry
5th NY Cavalry
1st Vermont Cavalry
118th Pennsylvania
119th Pennsylvania
12th Pennsylvania Reserves
5th Pennsylvania Reserves
9th Massachusetts
10th Pennsylvania Reserves
1st Vermont Brigade
6th Maine
49th Pennsylvania
5th Wisconsin

March route begins near the picnic area on South Confederate Avenue and finishes at the cul-de-sac on Howe Avenue.
At each stop the unit’s actions at Gettysburg will be given and the Roll of Honor read. In addition, a small flag will be laid in the name of the state that furnished the source of enlistments.

Participants will park on the RIGHT HAND side in the cul-de-sac on Howe Avenue and be shuttled to the start

Our permit allows weapons only within the confines of the march outlined above, so be advised, outside those limits you are subject to NPS rules, which forbid the carrying of firearms and can result in the confiscation of your weapon.

Howe Avenue. It's off rt 134, directly across rt 134 from Wainwright Ave.(Taneytown Rd.) If you take the road that cuts between Big and Little Round Top, the 20th of Maine Monument would be on your left, you will pass the Vermont Brigade Lion on your left, when you hit 134, go strait across. It's a "dead end" that sort of goes off into a field.

If you've never done this little walk, I think it's a much better alternative to the parade(thing). Tell 'em Grumpy sent you.

I about forgot these:

Participant Guidelines

Federal Impressions Only
(Standards per the Potomac Legion Guidelines)
http://www.geocities.com/potomac_legion/

This is a remembrance march, not a campaign field event, therefore we ask you to wear clothing that is clean and in good repair. Brass and leather should at least be wiped down and free of mud. The uniforms should be kept generic and free of unit specific identifiers (state jackets, regimental numbers, badges, state plates etc) as we would like to present a uniform appearance as a group. All troops are asked to participate as a private, unless designated to fill a specific position.

A couple of things. First Doug needs a bugler and would like to have two.

Second, some updated(I think at least regurgitated) information:

What's better than a no fee, just show up event?

A heck of a lot of folks far and wide are taking this little walk to heart, if the names listed on the company roster Doug had in hand yesterday are any indication. I might even make this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself on last years march. Even with a busy schedule this year...I look forward to the little jaunt over Hill and Dale.

I understand there's only two or three slots left to be filled on the NPS permit of 50 participants. If you're interested contact Doug Oakes at the e-mail addy listed in the first post. Also, Doug still needs a "Monument Speaker" or two. I look at it as a chance to learn about a new unit.

I'd like to personally thank all who have made a commitment to this event. for me, this is what Rememberance Day is all about.

I had fun, how about you?

Our casual march through the back woods of the 3rd day was a very good trek. I think the walk may have been shorter on the horizontal than on the vertical. The trek across the seldom seen right flank and the Cavalry positions was very interesting. Overall, I had a fun little walk, and ultimately found out that "Cookies are Like Pie, just smaller" along with some very good basic unit history presentations. Thanks to Doug & Dave for a good time.

Don't thank me, thank Doug and Terry Oakes. They did all the hard work. There were 39 in attendance, the largest group yet. Taps on Roundtop was pretty cool.

The life of a subaltern at an event like that is a pretty easy one.

Grumpy,

We, in this happy corner of the hobby, are fortunate to have at least two events each year quietly crafted by Doug and Terri. In 2008, the LHG Death March enters the tenth iteration, and they both admitted they'd lost count of the number of G'burg memorial marches cranked out over the years. Terri and that charcoal gray truck are getting to be about as familar as Old Whitey The Wundertruck in Potomac Legion Kabuki circles, too.

The fellows who had connections to the regiments where we stopped, listened to a snippet of their CW record, heard a recital of their casualties at G'burg, and then rendered those timeless gestures of respect, were obviously moved by the experience. The most visible was the young fellow who gave a moving county by county breakdown of where his beloved Pennsylvania Reserves originated. Yes, sometimes it is good to kneel down to tie your shoe before the dam breaks.

Elsewhere on the battlefield, folks left a variety of flags, flowers, wreaths, hardtack, and other items on or next to the monuments and markers. On the way back from dragging Bev through briars, bogs, and fencelines, I spied several walnut size pieces of coal on one Penna. marker along Wheatfield Road. You may know the one. That made me smile.

The other day at the PL meeting, Jeff Hayes mentioned a similar effort for the confederates, and they'll alternate to federal next year, if I remember correctly.

My apologoes for forgetting to mention Terry. Her logistical support has always been fantastic.
