Hello All,
This one is going to be a hoot!
The park has contracted cooks that are going to do KY Burgoo (if you've never eaten it you are in for a treat) and BBQ. No work this year - eat drink and be merry.
I think Joni is finalizing the scenarios now and it should all be posted by early December.
If you have horses this would be the event for you. It will all be based on the horse sales that took place in Central Kentucky shortly after the Civil War.
I will challenge folks to a race now. I have the best trotting mare in the country.
Mark your calender! This will be a unique experience in reenacting.
Watch for the full details.
Your Pard,
Chad Greene

Hello All,
I just about have this thing hammered out.
I should have the specifics and registration info posted next week.
I hadn't really thought about a GAR reunion, but that is do-able. Several noted union officers were at these sales (including G.A. Custer who bought horses from the Alexander's) as well as ex-confederates.
If there is an interest in doing that let me know and we can add that to the lists.
Thanks,
Joni House

There is a Civil War Custer who looks like the real thing living in Monroe, Mich. I think if you contacted him enough in advance he might be willing to come down and re-enact his role for us.
I tried to get him down for the Brandenburg event, but for some reason Custer and Morgan weren't good friends. I wonder why!

I intend to enter my rider in several of the races as well as purchase some fine stock that day for the farm.

I have been talking to Mrs. lawson about this event. I might come up on foot for this event. I have been trying to put together a US Marshal impression, but not much luck yet. How are people acquiring their roles? Is there a list or are they researching their own. Not much use for a bugler , except maybe "call to post", which I would have to research when that came into use for horse races.

We got ours from Joni House, so I'd suggest contacting her and/or getting on the Yahoo group to ask. If you need her email address, I can send it. We just asked to be buyers, and she assigned us real-life people, so I think everyone is either a historic person or a fictional person closely connected to real-life ones, but she'd be the one to ask.

Once you have registered. Joni is then giving out personnas. On the registration you can express an interest in something you would like to do.

Let it be known you would like the Marshall position. I am pretty sure we still need one. It is a personna that would give you lots of interaction with most everyone at the sale.

Looking forward to seeing you again.

It is with deep regrets that I must withdraw from the event. If you have seen the posts on the New Hope Church /Pickett's Mill event you know that I was accidentally shot in the stomach at point-blank range with a Colt revolver. I have a cavity about 5 cm in my stomach, and am addressing the inherent drainage of bodily fluids from the wound. The wound care professionals expect about 4-6 weeks of treatment, and will be installing a vacuum pump system today for that length of time. So I will have a dandy "fanny pack" with a pump and resevoir of "fluids" on my hip for at least a month.
I will not be able to event, ride horses, golf, or even cut my 10 acres of overgrown pastures for a while.

With regrets,

Patrick

Blessing to you Dear One,

Mrs. Simpson and I were on the phone late last night, wondering about your condition. We're pretty well versed in carrying folks around on a silk pillow who need such care, and were trying to figure out a time to call and check on you when it would not interupt your rest--and knowing there were many doing the same thing.

Alas, with this sort of thing 'pillow carrying' won't work--with that sort of invasive medical equipment, the potential for infection and heat problems are too great for you to be spending much time out and about.

We'll save your seat for the next event, and hope your Lovely Lady can come play too.

My dear Mrs. Lawson,
I am as well as can be expected under the circumstances. I gave thought to doing a "convalescing soldier" impression, but am concerned that exposure to heat, perspiration, dirty clothes, etc., would be ill-advised. And as I told Sivanna yesterday, the proximity of the wound to the "manly region" sort of negates the whole "local ladies taking care of me " scenario, as propriety would have
complicated such a thing for married women of class!

Being horse people with civilian interests we are planning to come up and spectate this event.

Does anyone know if there will be Burgoo available for sale to the public ?

I have read about the "2x4" stew many times and hope to try it.

Is it feasible to expect to fit a day of viewing this amazing event and the battlefield @ the manic neurotic detail level in one weekend ?

Thanks in advance.

Chris,

You'll have to plan your day well--the land is straight up and down and the museum will take a bit too. You'll also want to allow some time for the Merchants Row area in downtown Perryville.

The Burgoo is being served after the park closing hours. Once again, as folks have said time and again---get registered, put on your period clothes, and Come On.......

Some folks will recall the Widows and Orphans Fund table which was set up at the WIG's Shaker Village event in Sept. of '06, and at Gettysburg this past Nov.

We'll have it set up at Life On The Farm.

My dear Beverly,
Thank you, I shall think of ya'll often during the event time. We discovered a deep muscle infection yesterday, probably from some of the "matter" that was on the pants I was wearing, or the cleaning and rust inhibitive chemicals used on the revolver, so I actually lost ground yesterday. New medication is helping, but it reenforced my decision to lay low for a while!
Ya'll have a great time!

I was able to purchase the Yankee-girl-living-far-far-away-from-Dreamland economy size jar of sauce when I was in Huntsville last fall. It only comes out of the fridge for the most important of BBQ-ing occasions! However, I will eagerly jump at the offer of Milo's Tea. Well now,

The horses are unloaded, in the barn, grained, watered, and turned out to pasture. Tack is counted and hung, and barn locked.

Mr. Jobear the Burgoo King is much recovered, has his color back by Sunday evening and went on to work early this morning. Certain ladies have perfected their skills in hitching the two horse trailer, trailering horses, packing the tavern and driving.

The children and young folks are still asleep, filling all the beds and couches in the house. The various stable dogs however, have been up for hours, as have I, and I'm on sink number four of scrubbing heavy burgoo pots and washing fine crystal.

Much fun.

Miss Emily will be along after awhile with pictures.

It was great being there Saturday. I think my Ladies had a good time, except Cindy had some dress issues (my fault) so she wasn't able to dress up Saturday evening. The burgoo was wonderful.

I always enjoy seeing everyone at Perryville on the Farm. What's next year's theme? I wish I'd been there to brainstorm ideas for next year.

Miss Trisha,

The horse auction was great fun, with several new arrivals to participate. Alas, much of our good stock went to be wasted by the Army in the Dakotas, as they had (and were issued beforehand) much more cash than our post war pocketbooks contained. ( I was well pleased at the thought that went into the monetary issue: as a servant of the Clays, I had some 1's and 2's and one larger bill---and later found there were men there with fistfulls of $100's

After you left in the evening, the gentlemen departed for what proported to be a fellowship meeting. As they worked hard at the Widows and Orphans table all day, I guess such must be tolerated, but Mrs. B whispered that the Mister came in quite late, bereft of funds, and incapable of dealing with his boots. He mumbled something about the chips all sliding downhill.

In preparation for the auction, we pooled our meager funds in support of a certain young lady's inheritance, and purchased a piece of quite possibly the finest piece of breeding stock seen in this part of the country since before the war. The price was high, but not as high as it could have been (I believe a few gentlemen prevailed upon the Army buyer to leave it alone for the sake of brotherhood). There was some challenge in locating honest agents to bid for those ladies that had the wherewithal to buy.

The Simpson children and I have been washing and unpacking all day--and the fine bill of sale for that prize horse is now safely in the family's document box, where all important papers belong.

And Mister Peterson---I believe had you been there, you could have given Mr. Bailey a run for his money in the stick horse division. :D

Ditto! I was given over $500, which I thought very reasonable to purchase a trotter for Mrs. Belmont, but I could hardly advance beyond the opening bid for the one I picked out for her.

Though my wife said that it was probably good I didn't win that mare, because it would have broken the heart of a member of the Clay family. Since A.J. Alexander isn't supporting the publication of my stud book like R. A. did, and I need funds to put out volume two, I can't afford to upset any influential people who have money. :)

I believe had you been there, you could have given Mr. Bailey a run for his money in the stick horse division. :D

Well, that was just a delightful weekend, in spite of the torrential beginning. In fact, it wouldn't have gone nearly so well if Miss Judy hadn't so kindly extended her hospitality on Friday night. Thanks to all the hard work that everyone put into this event, especially Joni House & Chad Greene, Mark & Beverly Simpson, and Emily & Danny Burns. You seemed to have thought of everything!

Highlights: watching the the horse races and hearing minstrel music float up the hill, the pie & preservation auction (I'll have to step up my game to beat Miss Judy's fine work), the cordial, having period currency to spend, pooling it to help Miss Nettie win that fine horse she had her heart set on, and the burgoo.

We've never arrived home nearly so rested before.

I just want to add that I also had a wonderful time. I got my first horse for my 16th birthday and instantly got into bloodlines. I was able to take her back to the likes of Sir Archy, Diomed, and Timoleon though at that time I had no idea that it was thanks to Colonel Bruce. :D Bloodlines became more important to me after I got married and we bred our own mare, our baby sold all the way to British Columbia, where he went on to be a star. Unfortunately we don't have any horses at this time, so obviously we didn't bring one.

Portraying Col and Labelle Combs Bruce was a chance in a lifetime, since he was the one who wrote and published the thoroughbred stud book. The horses we studied for this event were of the same bloodlines I studied years ago, and the ones that made Woodburn's horses great!

The event has made me re-enthusiastic about studying the Kentucky thoroughbred of the CW era, as well as, though to a lesser extent the Kentucky Saddler. In fact, I'm still reading everything I can get my hands on about Woodburn and other great Kentucky thoroughbred farms of the era. :) I'd love to stop back at Keeneland and also the Kentucky Horse Park sometime and study even more in depth, but that's probably not something I'll do anytime soon.

Thanks again to Joni, Chad, Bev and anyone else involved in planning the event, as well as all the participants who worked hard to make it a fun event! I had a great time!

Thanks!

Linda.
