For an upcoming project, I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction for Uniform and Equipment information for the 2nd Conn. Vols in the Early-War - First Manassass period.

I would search online at the Connecticut Historical Society, in Hartford, CT. They have information on other Connecticut Units from the War there. I will look up the website for you and send you another reply soon. I will ask some of the members of my unit where you could do some more research and ask specifically about the 2D CONN Vol Inf. Good luck with your search and if there is anything more I can do, please feel free to ask.

Folks,

For an upcoming project, I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction for Uniform and Equipment information for the 2nd Conn. Vols in the Early-War - First Manassass period.


Connecticut regulations for its militia was the same as the US Army's 1858 regulations, the only difference being Conn. buttons instead of eagle buttons. Connecticut continued to follow equip new regiments leaving for the seat of War until the end of 1862.

I believe the 2nd CVI carried model 1855 rifle-muskets with the flank companies armed with Sharpe's rifles, but I need to check on that.

I got your PM, Sam. I would really like to know more about this project of yours and how/why the 2nd Connecticut VI was chosen. I will PM you when I get some more time and when I have some valuable information for you. Randy actually had some good advice...

I would search online at the Connecticut Historical Society, in Hartford, CT. They have information on other Connecticut Units from the War there.

They are certain to have some information there, but, second to that, you had mentioned in your PM your desire for uniform and equipment specifications. For that, photos are of course your best bet; you'd be surprised where those can turn up.

Hello Sam,

I have this description from an article of Military Modelling, " Sunday Picknick Uniforms "

First, Second and Third Connecticut:

Headdress: Dark Blue ( presumably a kepi ), no trim
Coat: Dark Blue, no trim and piping, U.S. regulation Frock coats without trim
Trousers: dark blue, trim green or sky blue trouser stripe: Trousers had an emerald green stripe for the flank companies ( A and B ). All other companies ( C to K ) had sky blue trouser stripes. 3d connecticut wore green or sky blue shoulder stripes ( presumably on the epaulettes ). Field Officers had wite stripes on their trousers. NCO's chevrons were in sky blue or green. The 2nd and 3d regiments were issued fatigue blouses ( sack coats ) with the exception of Co A Second Connecticut, New Haven Grays, who wore the following uniform: headdres grey, with black trim ( presumably a kepi ),
Coat: sack coat, skirts cut square, colour: grey, no trim, trousers grey, with sky blue trouser stripe.

Equipment, only the first conn. is mentioned in having black leather equipment, I believe the other regiments did so, as the most Federal troops wore black leather equipment around this time in contrary to the Confederates of which much had white webbing
( especially the Virginians ).

I also find it very interesting researching the First Manassas period uniforms, have you by any change any information on the uniforms of the First Michigan and the 27th Virginia at First Manassas ?
