Comrades,
I asked this question without sucess on the military side,so I'll ask it here.Maybe I should have started here.I want to know if anyone knows of an authentic pattern for a civilian style overcoat.I was thinking of a straight falling,5 button, stand and fall collar.I have the jean cloth and wool linning(FHW).CC has the military style and the Weller.I think the Weller is too limited in scope for ANV.Any thoughts please!

Rick,
The "Weller" pattern coat that CC has is attributed to David F.C. Weller of the 2nd Kentucky CSA. It is probably more appropriate for AOT or TMD than ANV. Of course, since this is a civilian pattern and most likely supplied from home, it could be appropriate for any theatre of operations, although that is purely speculative.
There are also a few civilian caped overcoat patterns and a "Confederate" great coat pattern around, however I cannot attest to their accuracy.
Good luck,
Rob Wiseman

Picked up this old thread searching on the Weller Overcoat. Here's a quote from the Ft. Donelson Diary on the web:
Overcoat of Pvt. D.F.C. Weller, 2nd Kentucky Infantry
"In the winter of 1861-62, the 2nd Kentucky had been furnished with hooded overcoats, privately purchased for the regiment by Maj. James W. Hewitt. These overcoats came in very handy at Fort Donelson, where Pvt. Weller reportedly wore his coat (although it does not show the marks of the wounds he suffered there). (Kentucky Military History Museum)".

Ross -- that overcoat is of a different pattern. The "Weller" is single-breasted with a hood and the original is at the KY Military History Museum.

Mr. Lamoreaux,
Many kind thanks for posting the link for the AHC overcoat pattern as I just yesterday cut the paper for that pattern. My intention today is to make an overcoat with a dark bottle green wool and rubber buttons, and with the scrap pieces, a sack coat of the same color with silk grossgrain edge trim and velvet collar and buttons. My first thought when hoarding this fine wool was to make a paletote also for myself, but now I don't think I'll have enough, so perhaps just a short jacket for me. Mind you, these coats are meant for civilian use, so I have no thought of keeping the look military.
I appreciate all of the comments from the other folks who have tried those patterns, and it's good to know that everyone is in agreement, they are great patterns.;)

My bad, I just replied to the original post wanting a civilian overcoat with a stand and fall collar, not noticing it was 5 years old and that the subsequent discussion was mainly about the Weller. I do know the difference between the two.
