View Full Version : Consolidated Authentics for Port Hudson

The 16th La. Infantry is consolidating with the Independant Rifles to form one company of Federal Authentics at the mainstream Port Hudson event March 29 & 30, 2008. Collectively we'd like to invite those of you who may find this date and location clear on your calendar to consider joining us. The effort last year was a good experience and brought some great talent together. While the event is mainstream the movements are not bad at all; through works and terrain that has remained fairly in tact since the seige.
The site is just North of Baton Rouge on the Port Hudson Battlefield Commemorative area.
If you'd like more information or just simply want to let me know you can make it, please email me at boreguard@earthlink.net

Last year was the first year we consolidated and the difference was noticeable. The campaigner company at Port Hudson was the largest company on site in a good while and it was a very impressive time. If anyone is interested, I suggest contacting Dennis ASAP, depending on numbers we may work out a ration issue. I believe the impression is the 12th Conn. Volunteer Infantry.

Pat you are right about the 16th's Federal Impression, it is the 12th Conn., but ...there aren't any real stipulations for the consolidated company, just Federal impressions and if they happen to be in line with the 19th Corp so much the better.
Thanks for mentioning it.

Definately not a difference in troop uniforms or anything of that nature, but it is worth mentioning there is an original surviving account by the Captain of the 12th Connecticut. Very good read for anyone interested:

The book in its entirety is a bit DRY to say the least, but packed with good information.

Tucker and the Tishagmingo Avengers will be there. Too bad the park won't let us fort up in the Arkansas Redoubt and gun you yankees down. Landrum makes a nice corpse! Regardless, it is a well preserved area and worth a visit.

I have to agree, Landrum makes a fine corpse...brings flies and all with him when he attends an event !
See ya in March Tom.

I agree with Pat... last year was one of the best experiences that I have had at Port Hudson. The consolidated company had a lot of talent. I hope to be able to drive or fly down for it again this year.

Dear Captain ,
I take e-mail in hand to regretfully inform you that due to occupational obligations I will not be able to assist you in putting down the Rebellion at Port Hudson this year. (I think Easter moving the date had something to do with it as well). Last year's Federal forces made a fine appearance and I thoroughly enjoyed my campaign with the 12 th CT . I hope you boys have been working on your "Yankee " impression and can now sell things , fix anything, clean your muskets and talk like Katherine Hepburn . I urge folks to support this event. As for me , well... there's always next year . Have a great event and Bully for the 12th CT/16th LA.

I too will be attending, along with my son Cody. I think that this time it will be just the two of us on the trek. I am looking foward to falling in with you and Charles.
As far a the Arkansas Redoubt that would be nice.

Coming back from church, my oldest asked me when Port Hudson was. This is a fun event. It may not qualify in the top 5 authentic events of the year, but it is a well worth your time. Come join us.

I finally got the itch back. Tom, sorry about January, fun times at school kinda became cumbersum. I'll see if I can drag a few more guys with me. I really need to dirty up some stuff anyways and get out again. The winter hiatus is over.

Sean,
Hope you can make it down to Port Hudson. Cross the river on the ferry at New Roads. It might be a thing of the past if they build the new bridge. Be careful driving through St. Francisville. Shannon Tilley is a law dog there and would love to throw you in the parish jail. If you see any fresh coon meat for sell along highway 61, get it and bring it for our rations. Seriously, Port Hudson is almost pristine ground and worth a visit.

I'll keep my eyes peeled Tom. By the way, has there been any consideration for portraying a singular Confederate unit, or are we to be a "generic" lot of unfortunates?
Sean Harla
We, the 21st Alabama, will be there as 165th New York Zouaves.

23 days to go. The authentic/progressive company is adding up, looks like we may top last years efforts by a few rifles. Currently we are sitting at 24 rifles !
If you are any where close to Port Hudson and have the weekend free give some thought to joining us.

Bump off of Dennis's statement. This is a great event. I missed it last year due to the ARMY...can't wait for it later this month.
For those of you who may drive in, we the 16th LA INF, usually find a good place to eat lunch on Friday in St Francisville, and really have a good time. Really a nice town to walk around in to get a taste of Louisiana.
Come Join Us!!!

Port Hudson...Port Hudson....Port Hudson....That is all I have heard my oldest boy say for the last eleven days.
This is probably the best it gets for (Not EBUFU) types of events:
- Friday at lunch is probably the best lunch I have with friends all year.
-We have a fine camp location.
-The early battle Sat. will tell you if you are in shape for Pickets Mill.
-Some may call the Host Unit 7th Louisiana Farbs....I call them darn fine cooks, and good friends.
-The dance...yes it is farb, but you know...it is a mix of Zydaco / Bluegrass, and it is usually very good.
-It is a good time to hear about Chickens Adventures out west.
-It is even a better time to work with our "Next Generation" of Reenactors.
SO BOTTOM LINE....(I am sounding like James Carville)...come on down and see us...the Event is good, the eating is better, and Lazze La Bon Temp Rouller.

As you know, I won't be able to make it this year. I deeply regret this since Port Hudson is one of the best times I have all year. At least I can make Pickets Mill! I will be there in spirit.

There's a great bibiliography available on Port Hudson worth casting an eye on. I just finished reading & recommend Port Hudson Confederate Bastion on the Mississippi by Lawrence Lee Hewitt, 1987, Louisiana State University Press, ISBN 0-8071-1351-4.

Hope you've been drinking the H2O guys, and maybe hitting the stairmaster as well.
Consolidated, we're sure to have fun this weekend. I'll be there Friday morning as it's only a 2 min ride from my doorstep. We're looking to be set up near where we were last year. More east of that position, still on the pond in the shade but closer to the main drive.
Everyone be carefull coming in. PM me if you need directions (my cell number), most of the Independant Rifles are born and raised within 5 min. of Port Hudson. With the exception of two, one of which gets cranky after 2 hours in the wagon train.

Brethren,
Pelican Civil War Lodge #1861 will be holding lodge on Saturday night, I don`t know for sure where yet. The W.M. is supposed to get with the Park personel upon his arrival to find out where they will put us. I hope the Brethren will try to attend. It will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday night, as soon as I find out I will announce it at Officer`s call Saturday morning. We look forward to sitting in Lodge with new Brothers.

I vowed never to cross the river and that I would hide in the deep woods rather than fight so far away from home and hearth, but if there are no gunboats to hinder my crossing I will be at Port Hudson to help my comrades find Landrum and hang him from a Tupelo tree.

I'll bring jute twine. Some of the boys don't weigh much of anything and they should dangle fine with the lightweight stuff.

That is why I travel with my own Luca Brasi. Why just tonight, he was so bold as to enter into a Police Detective's home in St. Francisville and make off with an entire federal kit while the Detective, who shall remain nameless, is in Tennessee on vacation, and will not return until after the event.

No ropes needed to stretch these necks. They'll be high among a tide of blue, approaching those rebel works. But bring some if you may & meet some of Ole' Abe's Northern steel and you'll have to devil to pay!
HOOZAH for the 12th Vols!

I will not pretend this to be an AAR. Port Hudson was fun as always. Had the best shrimp po-boy at "The Mag" ... The Beer was cold, btw. The tactical was the usual, but it gave me a measurement of where my PT needed to be focused for Pickets Mill, we had some hills and it was hot. Had a Lodge meeting of the Pelican Lodge1861, that was a good-thing. Glad to have had the Independent Rifles, the 32nd Miss, and a few new individuals with us. It was a good gathering, it was fun, and fun is good.

The consolidated company was treated to rations bought, cooked, and issued by the Independant Rifles, this combined with all the other contributions made this a good experience for all...I hope anyway. Hope to do this again at future events in our region.
