What if once a year we held a giant silent auction for donated items, etc - all funds going toward preservation?

I think its a great idea.

I think "special" items would work well for a fundraiser, such as "Virginia Haversack" that Greg Starbuck did a little while ago. As a "thank you" for the donation, folks could walk away with a true top-of-the-line reproduction item that, while relatively common for the period, is not something one sees in vendor product lines everyday.

A silent auction for "the best Fed sack coat ever", while a wonderful and useful item, would still be a little "Heinz 57" (yawn). ...if that makes any sense.

I for one am definitely all for it. I have stuff I would donate. And, raffles work well too.

I think this is a great idea. I would like to donate as much to preservation as possible this year, but funds have been a little tight for me lately. However, if I can donate some of my time by making some leather goods to be used to raise the funds than by all means please let me know where you would like donations sent!

I hope myself and co. can be of service toward whatever preservation goals you set up through this site. Just let us know what we can do or what you would like us to donate.

I would support something like a raffle or auction. How would the funds raised be distributed? Would there be a chance that in the future the Western and Trans Miss. theaters would recieve support?

How about creating, and offering for sale, a Calendar using the Monthly Covers as images?

I don't think it would to difficult to contact and get permission from the photographer and the person who submitted (i.e. the owner of the actual glass or tin pate). The proceeds could go to upkeep of this site and preservation efforts.

My thought...

How about at authentic events (W64 would be ideal f0r this) if there were a way we could buy period money with real money and play period games of chance (chuck-a-luck, poker, faero, etc.). Then, we could gamble with the period money and the man that had the most period money at the end would win a donated prize (a good of some sort- pistol, clothing article, etc.).

All the real money goes toward preservation.

I'm in favor of the silent auction or any other easily controlled fund raiser; something that can be successfully completed with minimum effort for the administrator(s) and cost to the forum.

Is there a means of gleaning some revenue from the buy/sell listings? It seems a lot of money passes hands because of the opportunities the listings offer.

Didn't the A-C sell t-shirts many years ago? Was that a pres effort? How'd it work out? Seems like t-shirts or ball caps might be a simple thing to have made and then sell.

Please count me in. There are some things that I make very infrequently, and I'd be happy to make a donation of something a bit more rare for a silent auction.

What about a 50/50 type raffle with 50% going to preservation, the other 50% in the form of a gift certificate to the Approved Vendor(s) of choice? That may be more appealing to someone who already has a widget from Mr. X that is in the raffle, but they will hold out in case Vendor Y puts one of their Gadgets in the next go around. It also provides business revenue the Approved Vendors as well.

what ever you decide I think it is all great. Our unit has done tricky trays in the past to raise money for various things and an online auction is very similar. I think it is going to be good I know someone who may donate an enfield.
