Why, yes, Johnny, the parable of the mustard seed doth come to mind.

Johnny,
I am all wound up thinking about it. The cut nails I needed for my box arrived today and a complete revelation landed after a simple question I posed. I dare say, I'm probably not ready for it, but I am certain I will have a great experience reliving one man's history of the Civil War...

I built my box this weekend. Now, all I have to do is figure out what to fill it with, besides my wife's gingerbread cookies, that is!

Bill-
Good comment about building the box... It reminds me... I live in an apartment and the noise/lack of space to build a box has made it impossible for me to build one myself. Luckily, John Peterson, who is making me a nice japanned tin lantern, will build me a box with said lantern in it for delivery at mail call.
My wife wrote me a letter with her fountain pens and put it in the mail last week.
:)
I'm pumped to kick the 2008 season off. I've been collecting little odds 'n' ends for "set dressing" around the Pine Cottage.
Any of you boys have a period deck of cards so we can play poker for period money? I'll bring my money!
Ginger snaps are perfect period treats... I have sugar stick peppermint candy as a treat.
Thanks -Johnny

Kick off?!?! Heck, since January 1, I've already done a small tactical at Camp Roberts, participated in two Saturday Living Histories at Fort Whipple, conducted our units annual meeting where I was reelected president, went on an 8 mile overnight patrol into snow covered mountains followed by a two day garrison event at Fort Tejon, and spent a week recovering from pneumonia. ;-)
I suppose things will get busier, but seems to me this year is already off to a great start. :-)
See you at W'64.

Like Troy's neck of the woods, the season never really stops around here, as we've already been out twice since the first of the year--and I'm gonna be real quiet so Doc won't notice I'm tiptoeing off to the land of snow and ice, a scant week out of the hospital.
The last stitch went in Pvt. George Leichtman's wool shirt about 1:30 last night. It has the poorest buttonholes known to man, but what do you expect of a govmint seamstress workin on piecework? I did have the common decency to soften it up a little, and it is drying on the upper bannister.
Another Private's gloves will get a woolen inner lining while I'm traveling.
I'm still pulling out patches, buttons, darning yarn, mending thread, and all the bits and flotsam that make up a good period sewing basket. I'm also remembering that there are fellers who owe me 'a few good buttons' for some mending job or another, and have done so for some time.
No mail call box for me (for one thing, I came on board as a replacement too late to get such niceties done), but the lack of such also dovetails nicely into the story of how I ended up amoungst y'all.
I've got a nice box of bone dominos I imagine somebody will want to buy before marching out of registration, some dice, and a few other implements of moral downfall. Once the event starts though, all that's gone, and I become a good ( if somewhat crabby) Presbyterian (more or less).

I still am...
Currently sitting in a bar in the Atlanta Airport waiting for my connecting flight to Buffalo. I'll be arriving after 11 PM and then picking up Troy and Todd in the morning, between tying up my 21st Century work and entering the 19th Century.
I can hardly control myself at this point, but seeing as I am portraying a Soldier who was also a Methodist Minister. I will place my future in God's hands and do my best to do his work today in our world.

Well, based on the weather I've seen the last few days here in Ohio, I'm sure some of those southern boys are going to get their ten-year quota for snow all in this week. :)

Nice weather. A little more snow would have been helpful.......
Piled up in a nice hotel near the Buffalo International Airport, happy and content beyond words, having spent the last four days of my life very well occupied... and now clean, warm, and none the worse for wear.....
