Hello All,
During the war, many Northern states raised regiments of volunteer light artillery, such as the 1st Pennsylvania, 1st Michigan, and 1st New York. Having read Col. Wainwright's "A Diary of Battle" (ed. Allen Nevins, 1862), I was left wondering something, what became of the regimental staffs of the light artillery units? Since the regiments were split up after being accepted into federal service, often with the batteries being sent to different armies in different theaters, and the field officers were sent to serve as division/corps chiefs of artillery, what became of the others assigned to the regimental staff - i.e. the Adj., Sgt. Maj., QM, ect. I know from reading Wainwright's work that Maj. and later Lt. Col. Fitzhugh, 1st New York Light, was attached to his staff while commanding the artillery brigade of the 5th Corps during the overland campaign and at Petersburg, but that other field officers (such as Maj. Thomas Osborn 4th Corps Artillery Chief and Maj. John Reynolds 20th Corps Artillery Chief) served else where. Was there any uniformity in these practices, or was it at the discretion of the unit CO?
