Weighted Points on a bodice

I'm at work and shouldn't be on here, but HAD to share because this is so great.

A purple silk bodice at the Museum of the City of New York (museum dates it c. 1863-5) with points in the back that are weighted with little packets of loose filings. Lead? Sand? I can't tell. About a teaspoon's worth appears to be sewn in between the lining and outer fabric.

Have you ever seen this elsewhere?

I've not seen that before! Are the points also boned, or just weighted?

Points are the wrong word. They are actually three little point-like attachments coming out of a straight back waist (they look like miniature versions of what will happen with the dresses in the late 60s).

The dress was worn by Mrs. Gould, so it is NYC high fashion for sure.

In answer to your question, no, they are not boned, though the bodice is boned in the usual places (sides, front, etc)
