I spotted this Toast in an Illinois newspaper and thought you might get a chuckle out of it. 1823 was a time of vehement political contention in Illinois. That year some politicians hoped to introduce slavery into the state by altering the state constitution. It didn't happen, but some people became lifelong enemies as a result of the contest. Here's a toast by the pro-slavery party against their enemies --

Edwardsville Spectator, April 19, 1823.

"May they ride a porcupine saddle, on a hard trotting horse, on a long journey, without money or friends.” [7 cheers]

Silvana,

Nice. The more things cahnge the more they stay the same. It is nice to be reminded that the adversarial relationships between our current politicians, here in in the Sucker State, is in keeping with our wonderful heritage.

I love toasts and insults from history. Thanks :)

Winston Churchill is one of my favorite sources.

Ron, I have admired your samuel Clements quote for some time. It too is relevant today.
One of my favorites from him is "never argue with a fool. people will wonder which is the fool!"
