View Full Version : Evolution of Staff Theory

Are there any good studies out there regarding the evolution of staff theory from pre- to post-war? I am aware of such references of the Customs of Service which give general outline of duties - I am more interested in books, dissertations, or articles discussing the evolution of staff duties as a result of the War. Also, how much influence did developments in Europe - particularly the Prussian general staff - play on American theory? I am particularly interested in support to commander of higher echelons (division and above).

"Lee" by Clifford Dowdey gives a small insight into the ANV staff. It seems as though poorly defined staff duties - not administrative, but tactical - is the culprit for the many coordination issues throughout Lee's command. Does anybody know of any other references on this topic?
