Friends,
If appropriate, I would like to share the website for a source of some foodstuffs that are appropriate to our time period. Items such as saleratus and pearlash for example. The vendor is Deborah Peterson who is an expert on historic foods and foodways. And if you order before May 4, shipping is free. (I do like that word!) While many of her offerings are suited to the 18th century, many are still used in 19th century receipt books.

I wholeheartedly concur with your recommendation! I met Deborah last year at the annual Ft. Frederick Colonial Market Fair and was impressed with her breadth of knowledge, food availability and presentation. I usually do a cook impression and finding accurate ingredients/substitutes can be difficult if they are no longer used in modern cooking. For anyone who lives in the midAtlantic area, Ft. Frederick is a stone French and Indian war era fort 20 miles west of Hagerstown, MD off Rt. 70. It is held every April and you can frequently find items/equipment that you can use in the 19th century. I picked up last week at this year's fair a hand carved buckeye wood dough bowl and a harnessmaker's stitch holder at a very reasonable cost.
