Civilian clothing mostly, plus I'm pretty much into full replacement mode. Of items that I have worn out. But you can never have to many drawers, shirts socks etc etc.....

Well,
I'm now in the market for a frock coat, a new pair of trousers, new hat, civilan shirt, and accoutrements for my early war confederate impression since I have finished upgrading my late war kit.

Civilian Blankets-looking for more variety in HEAVY civilian blankets--we have several of Pat Klien's, but are trying to avoid the "cookie cutter" look
Civilian Cookware --got the Federal issue kettles from Osman, need something more appropriate for civilians in the deep South, but something that does not rust out in one season like my last tin plated kettle did.
Civilian shoes--Got 2 reasonable pair, but they are getting worn out. Want something in the "poor folks" range--seems like many of the ladies shoes availible look more mid-to-upper class.
Another wagon.........

Have you considered purchasing a pair of brogans? I recently bought a pair of Lincoln Log Cabin brogans from one of the girls in our group who hated them. (They didn't fit her very well) I love them to pieces and they look oh so "poor". :-) Remind me to show them off this weekend.

I have to agree! I am somewhat in the market for a good civilian blanket myself. Certainly don't want to use an original.

Gotta get me a good civilian shirt, and replace these Skinner Row brogans with a pair from Mattimore or MB&S. Far as the hat goes, I like my kepi and it looks good, but in the summertime I come home from events with ears that look like they've been microwaved. Wasn't there some author who talked about kepis 'hanging from the trees like strange fruit' in the wake of the AOT? Don't blame 'em sometimes. :(

I have a lot of stuff, and I am always on the lookout for an item to upgrade to, I would like to get a good Frock coat to replace my Jarnigan, but I find that I don't use the frock much at all so I am not sure if I will replace it or not, but I do keep a list of everything I have and the maker and replacement value for insurance reasons, I don't take everything with me to events but I have enough stuff that I can pretty much meet any Federal equipment guidelines,
here is my list of stuff.

I am currently in the market for a nice pair of boots (Mattimore Harness), a good rubber or oilcloth mechanics cap, and fabric. I am always in the market for fabric, but specifically I need a nice corduroy for a pair of trousers, red or blue wool flannel for an overshirt, and some white Pima cotton for a shirt.
I am also on the look-out for some brown polished cotton since it is now no longer being manufactured (according to Darlene at Needle and Thread). It would be really nice if someone could start weaving some brown Holland (hint hint :wink_smil ).

I've been waiting forever to find a source for those nifty round brass vents for the top of forage caps seen in so many period images. They must have been popular. Currently have an original on my cap, but I'm sure these things would sell like hotcakes and probably wouldn't be that hard to make for someone with the right metalmaking skills/tools.

I'm looking for without success a reproduction Bible. I have a repro New Testament, but would like to have a complete work. I have considered an original, but those I have seen are way too fragile to destroy in a haversack.
theknapsack
05-31-2004, 02:03 AM
Mr. Atwood,
I would actually recommend getting an original. I got a really good condition 1847 (Mexican War) Pocket Bible (old and New Testaments) from ebay for 48 dollars. It's in beutiful condition and I have used it at a few events with no problems. Oh, and I wouldn't recommend you carrying it in your haversack if it is an original, because you don't want to get grease and crumbs on it (depending on if your on campaign or not). I attached a few pictures of mine.
As for me, I am in the market for:
1. a new Sack Coat
2. A new knapsack
3. a new ground cloth.

New brogans...old ones are about to fall off my feet

Groundcloth
Shelter half(maybe)

sling for my enfield

I clicked on "other" because I am now planning a long running budget )which feels like it rivals the Federal Government's budget) to acquire period-correct citizen's clothing. A long shot, starting with a sack/trousers combo to be augmented by other clothing accessories which will allow me to portray the broad casual spectrum of different socio-economic classes.
Of course, duds are useless without the knowledge, skills and attitudes to back them up, so there will be a lot of research to go with it.
Let's hit the books . . .

I'm looking for a real Colt made 1860 army pistol. My original is getting tired (meaning it's looking like the antique it is) but I just don't cotton to using a foriegn made reproduction. I have the continuation Navy Colt pistol, but want an army one. I don't believe Colt still makes their Civil War models any more, so I'll have a hard time--but I'm looking.....
Also I can never have too many good forage caps and kepis--I'm a nut for them. (a kepi slut?)

Just about everything in a material sense, I'm moving up from being in a mainstream unit after 3 years. So far I have a Don Smith forage cap and 2 rivet bayonet scabbard, SS Sutler suspenders and civilian shirt, and that's about it.
I do have a full kit, but it's not all up to the standards of the 1st California, or to the new standards I have set for myself. I'm planning on ordering the SA Blouse and Trouser kits from County Cloth. And other items I want to see if I can make myself, as a college student I don't have a lot of money to throw around. I'm also a firm believer in DIY.
