The Lost Tribes: Chasing Price through Missouri

I know this is really early to be talking about events for 2009 but here goes.

We would like to announce “The Lost Tribes: Chasing Price through Missouri” set for September 25-27, 2009.

Location: Boonesfield Village near Defiance, Missouri.
I went to this site for the first time in April and all I can say is WOW! The site is set up for what we do. Take a look at the link that I have provided.

Military Impression: We will be portraying Company I of the 21st Missouri.

Citizen Impression: That information will come at a later date. We will need citizens!
Silvana Siddali will be in charge of the citizens.

Time: Early October 1864

Scenario: We will be occupying the town of Gray Summit. While there we will have interactions with the citizens, look for Confederates deserters, and much more.

I'm so suprised few in this end of the hobby use Old Bethpage village for Living Histories.

Just to give you all a feel for how this will be different from other "occupy the town" stuff you have done before, keep these things in mind:

1. It's Missouri in 1864. Far more complicated than the usual "unfriendly populace" thing. Who is Unionist? Are they telling the truth? Who is disloyal? Are the accusations we are hearing just retribution for some prior disagreement between neighbors? Those who are unfriendly- would they harbor partisans? Are they partisans themselves?

2. It's the 21st Missouri. Splendid record in battle- the core of the regiment at its formation was at Athens, first entire regiment in the fray at Pittsburg Landing, etc. However- probably one of the worst disciplined regiments in the U.S. Army. Desertion was so epidemic that the regiment had to maintain semipermanent detached details in northeast Missouri to hunt them down. After David Moore rose to brigade command, the regiment's field officers spent the rest of the war bickering and filing charges against each other. Whenever not on active campaign, charges of drunkenness were common. The regiment's Chief Musician was charged with impersonation of an officer in order to fraudulently charge liquor to the U.S. government! Despite having been a '61 regiment, the 21st was forced to serve through '66 on occupation duty- and the town they were assigned to petitioned the army to send them away in favor of any other unit!

As you can see, this scenario can provide for a VERY different "occupation event" experience...

You said you need civilians. I would love to do the parson gig again. I will bring the boys make sure Deborah has the candy shop set up.

Boonesfield is a great location for a living history.

I'm sure this will be one of the best events ever held at Boonesfield. Because this is a historic site, we started out with relatively small events, but now that we've built a good working relationship with the site admins we're ready to expand. As many of you know, the village is beautiful and has virtually no modern intrusions. By the time Holler's event rolls around, there will be more workshops & the rest of the buildings will be fully restored and open to occupation. We should be able to accommodate more civilians than before. The impression for civilians should be pretty familiar: respectable farmers and professionals (like attorneys, school teachers, printer, grist mill operator, etc.)

If you'd like to learn more about the authenticity standards, please go to the Star of the West (http://starofthewestsociety.googlepages.com/)home page and click on "authenticity guidelines." The guidelines for Marmaduke's Raid are very similar for Boonesfield (or Grey Summit, in this case.) More specific details are forthcoming.

Standards for this event will be very carefully observed. But since this event is still a year and a half in the future, there's plenty of time to put toghether a highly authentic kit. This will be one for the annals!

“Shaw departed for civilian life, bequeathing a problem to his successor.* There were complaints from citizens of the Harrisonville vicinity over “depredations” committed by the Third Division lads against livestock, liquor, and groceries belonging to local folk.”** (Anders, 196)

I believe this has already been mentioned elsewhere, but I wanted to remind folks that the Lost Trib es event has been rescheduled to October 2-4, 2009.

I never read anything closely, but will there be a place for.....let me see how I should say this....BUSHWHACKERS? I suppose that Price had attracked some to his great sweep, scalps and all, and maybe some Ground Hornets could come up that far into Missouri to help the cause.
