View Full Version : After The Battle Federal Updates

Folks,

This was previously sent by Kevin over the federal email loop, but it
is worth repeating here as an encouragement for those who may be astride the
proverbial "kitchen pass fence."

================================================== =====

Gentlemen,

This is a preliminary communication to Federal registrants for
November's "After the Battle: Fredericksburg" event. Just a few
brief points in this e-mail to "open hailing frequencies".

COMMUNICATIONS ON THIS EVENT

If you've participated in a Columbia Rifles-run event before you know
there'll be plenty of pre-event communication and this one will be no
different from previous CR-run events. There will NOT be an all-
Federals listserver (although the company commanders are either
contemplating or already implementing them at the company level).
Pre-event communications to the battalion (two companies) will be
sent to each registrant via direct e-mail, to dispense with the e-
mail overload that often accompanies a full-battalion listserve. E-
mails will be sent BCC'd to avoid dangling the temptation in front of
people to hit "reply all" and flood folks' e-mail boxes. If you have
questions or comments, please contact your company commander or me
(if you don't know who your company commander will be yet, feel free
to contact me directly). If your question is a good one, we'll send
its answer to all Federal registrants.

Prior to the event you will be provided with information on the
skills you will need to get the most out of this event while having
fun during it. In short, to start, know skirmishing and picket duty.
J

This is a preliminary communication. The "real stuff" will start
when registration closes.

COMPANY STRUCTURE

The registration list below has not yet been divided into the two
companies we will be portraying. Please encourage your friends to
register ASAP so that the company commanders can get their non-
commissioned officers lined up. The following has been submitted to
be posted to the event website:

*********************

Eleventh New Jersey Commissioned Officers for "After the Battle"

Picket Detail Commander: Kevin O'Beirne (Columbia Rifles), portraying
Major Valentine Mutchler, Eleventh New Jersey Volunteers

Company D (Third Regiment USV & Friends): Mark Herzog (28th
Massachusetts, Co. B/Major, Third Regiment USV), portraying Captain
Luther Martin, Co. D, Eleventh New Jersey Volunteers

Company I (Columbia Rifles, Potomac Legion, & Friends): Dave Towsen
(Columbia Rifles), portraying Captain John T. Hill, Co. I, Eleventh
New Jersey Volunteers

*********************

SCENARIO PLAN

The scenario plan for the event has been completed by the event
committee and is, as you probably expect, heavily based on historical
events that occurred on the site where we'll be reenacting. In fact,
much of the historical documentation needed for the Plan is written
directly into the Plan. Some portions of the historical
documentation will be conveyed to registrants well before the event
so that each registrant has the opportunity to read up a bit on what
we're portraying. No, it won't be information overload.

I believe that what we'll be doing at this event is either unique or,
at least, very rarely done in reenacting. Please convey to your
comrades that this event offers 1) A chance to portray some things
and activities that reenactors do not normally get to do, 2) A one-
time only chance to reenact, in an opposing forces event, on this
historic ground, and the only place you can do an opposing forces
event on a preserved portion of the Fredericksburg battlefield, and
3) A great way to help CWPT, both with some fundraising and to help
them publicize the history behind why CWPT spent a lot of money in
2006 to acquire this site.

I'd like to thank the following for contributing materially to the
historical research done for the Federal portrayal for this event:
Jason Hamby, Eric Mink, and Charles Heath.

More communications are forthcoming, starting later this month.
Please feel free to post this on the forums if you see fit, and to
forward this e-mail to friends who may be interested in attending
this event.

Referring to the Elmira Death March, there was some discussion on carpooling. I believe the same went for Winter 64. So Ill ask regarding After the Battle, anyone in the Western New York area that I might be able to hitch a ride with?? You could email me at: unionprivate@verizon.net At this point I am still unsure if I could make this event. However, carpooling would be a big help. Thanks for your time.

Mike,

If you want to post that on the Death March listserver, feel free to do so. The standard carpool post this year blossomed into a heck of a ridesharing arrangement for a number of people, and I suspect the overlap between the DM X attendees and ATB attendees may be considerable. In addition, some of the curious onlookers who did not register and attend DM X may be rolling down the asphalt for ATB in November.

See you soon.
