Y'All,

Here are some pics of a Gardner Pattern Canteen that I have been studying.

The canteen has carved in one side the following inscription:

12th Ala. Vol.
R.A.M.
D

The canteen was origanlly held in the collection of the William McKinley Post #25 GAR, Canton, Ohio. In 1949 that entire GAR collection was transfered to the Stark County Historical Society. The Canteen is listed as being in the GAR collection in an 1895 & 1923 collections report.

Anyways, I thought I would share the pictures. The canteen is in poor shape, but this has aided me in studying how it was assembled and some of the various wood shapes.

If anyone out there may aid me in finding Alabama Rosters, in an effort to come close to an ID of this canteen...I would appreciate it.

Mr. Morris,

There was a gentleman in Co. "D", 12th Alabama Infy. named Rosebury Mitchel or Methel. Not sure of middle initial. Co. D was raised from men of Coffee County in 1861 and was active in the ANV. See Ken Jones' site for details

http://www.tarleton.edu/~kjones/rodes.html#12th

Will cross reference the 1860 Coffee County census to see if he's listed (perhaps with a middle initial!)

Thank You,

That is a start.

I am going to be going through our GAR Records to see who donated the canteen, and their regiment and information.

Then I can cross reference and see if the two units ever met on the field, or provide anymore information relevent to the canteen and how it wound up her in Canton,Ohio.

Thank You,

Todd,

The Rosebury Mitchel that Gary mentions is also on the roll as Roseburg Methel from D Company.

There was also a Sgt. Reuben A. Mitchell from B Company and Pvt. R.A. Mizzles also from B Company. None of these may be your man, but it may help narrow your search.

Regards,
Bruce Blackmon

Only time will tell.
