Pards & Comrades,

I have taken on the task of raising a company for the Bummers event in November. It seems as if everyone and his brother has a foraging party for this event. I would encourage any of my pards to throw in with us on this venture. The core of this comapny will be made up of Genuine Illinois boys. In view of that fact perhaps I should offer up my postion to the highest bidder. :confused_ Send me a note if you want to join us or you need a home.

As Division Commander I will be attaching myself to the 63rd Illinois for the event.
This will be a very good midwestern foraging party so sign up gents we would love to have you aboard. Lt. Miller and myself will make sure you have a unforgetable experience.
Cheers

Hi Rod,

I can now state that the Hard Heads will be supporting the 63rd Illinois for Bummers to help fill out the second ONV foraging party. We look forward to honoring these fine men.

So for those looking for a home, the 63rd Illinois will be a fine grouping of Suckers - and we get Sorchy on top of that to boot.

All the best,

Tom

Bully for the 63rd! You guys are only about 30 short of the best of Illinois soldiery (we being the 93rd), but it will be great to have you close by in a scrape or to collect any leftovers that fail to attract our educated palates...;)

Suckers trump.

Whose that Rod? I am now inroled to go to school this fall. I am playing baseball so may not be able to make it. Even thou we dont start till the next year we have mulitpal camps and gym dates.

What is the number for you party?
I was interested in going as jonny because of relatives from Georgia during the Shermans march.
What all will we be doing?
Is there a chance to go as a musician?

Sorry for the annoying comments but was just wondering...

Thanks a lot,

Chris

63rd Illinois Infantry

The sixty-third Infantry was organized at Camp Dubois at Anna, in Union County, Illinois. Along with the 54th, 60th and 62nd Illinois Infantry Regiments it was part of the Kentucky Brigade. The men of Companies A, C, E and I served from Richland County, Company B from Edwards County, Company D from McLean County, Company F from Perry and Franklin counties, Company G from Crawford County, Company H from Macon County, and Company K from Coles County. The Regiment was mustered in for three years service on April 10, 1862 and ordered to Cairo, Illinois on April 27, then to Henderson Kentucky on July 12 to defend against guerilla attack. In August the Sixty-third moved to Jackson, Tennessee and in November to Lagrange, Tennessee. On November 28th, as part of the Yocna expedition they moved against Pemberton causing his retreat to Grenada, Mississippi. However, the fall of Holly Springs, Mississippi to the enemy forced abandonment of the expedition and the Regiment returned to Lagrange on January 10, 1863 and remained there until ordered to Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 10. On May 21 the Regiment crossed the Mississippi River at Warrenton and to complete the encirclement of the city. As part of the siege of Vicksburg, the Regiment moved to Milliken’s Bend in June and on June 16 participated in the capture and burning of Richmond, Louisiana. Following the fall of Vicksburg, the Sixty-third moved to Helena, Arkansas in September then on to Memphis and marched to Chattanooga arriving there November 20. They fought in the battle of Mission Ridge November 23 and 24 and pursued Bragg’s forces to Ringgold. Georgia. On December 26 the Regiment went into winter quarters at Huntsville, Alabama. On January 1, 1864 two hundred and seventy two men of the Regiment re-enlisted in the veteran service and in April left for home on furlough. In May the veterans rejoined the Regiment at Huntsville, Alabama and in May they were ordered to Triana (Triune), Mississippi on the Tennessee River. On June 22 they moved to Kingston, Georgia for guard duty on the railroad running between Chattanooga and Atlanta. On November 11, 1864 the Sixty-third joined Sherman in the Atlanta campaign, marching from Atlanta to Savannah in time to join in the siege of Savannah. In 1865 the Sixty-third fought in the Carolina campaign and saw action at Salkehatchie Swamp and Columbia, South Carolina and Bentonville, North Carolina. Following Johnston’s surrender they march to Washington, D.C. for the Grand Review on May 24. They moved to Louisville, Kentucky and were mustered out July 13, 1865.[1],[2]

I have to say I'm sorry I live way out west in OK, as I am impressed and inspired as a born and bred sucker myself. While I grew up in Warren County (83rd IL territory), I have lots of family in Bloomington and lived and went to school in Champaign. What you gents are doing to commemorate this unit is great. A big huzzah to you!
