I would like to announce the roles for civilian men that have already been taken. A few more are still available. Please bear in mind that ideally these roles should be filled by gentlemen who are not eligible for the Enrolled Missouri Militia (18 - 45) or other military service.

The following roles have already been filled:

Sheriff, Schoolmaster, Pastor, Grist Mill Owner, Carpenter, Mercantile Clerk, Telegraph Operator, Inn Keeper (Capt. Smith's Inn).

We could still use:

Physician or surgeon; possibly a Mayor; kitchen help at the Inn (technically this could be filled by women as well); Printer (not a newspaper reporter, please, just a printer, preferably someone with at least rudimentary knowledge of 19th century technology.) Most other civilian gentlemen would probably be farmers, but if you have special knowledge of an appropriate profession and don't, ahem, fit the military profile, please get in touch.

Sheep farmer taken, Telegraph Operator now open. Persons willing to learn 19th c telegraph technology may apply. We have two machines & wire, so there are two telegraph positions open.

I'd like to apply for the position of Telegraph Operator.

Here's an early 1850's picture of some telegraph operators with their favorite instrument-

Great image, Carl. I'm sorry to say that I fell behind in my posts -- Mr. Warren and Mr. Droska are going to run the telegraphs. I know you were talking about possibly being a medical man? Were you still interested in that?

In any case, you can always fall back on giving banjo lessons! At fifty cents per lesson, you should have a land-office business.

Terry,
I reckon there will be free drinks supplied at your Inn for upstanding members of the community?

Tom,
If you can get past the blue horde that will occupy our peaceful village you are more then welcome to. And I promise not to bother you about keys if you show up:rolleyes:

Seems to me in reading through a raft of period accounts, letters, and journals, that a good role for civilian males would be laying dead in a field- shot from behind with a blast of double-barrel slugs, swinging from a noose in a tree, crying in front of the pile of cinders that used to be his home, or posing as a non-combatant but really having loyalties to one side or the other and likely having busy nights shooting down neighbors in their fields, hanging them from stout limbs, and putting their houses to the torch.

Well that's true Fred, but one has to be subtle about such things.

I am certain that the glowing account of bushwhacker activity in Missouri will lure, I mean entice folks to sign up as Federals so law and order will be restored to the state. As I understand it the Federals will be Iowa fellows and not the pukes in the Missouri Milita which were even bigger scoudrels than the bushwhackers. Unless the Inn keeper is actually Leeper in disguise.

Silvana,

I am planning on attending the Lost ribes event and plan to bring my sons. In order to be with and take care of my sons at the event, I would like very much to have a civilian role. Some of my pards and I were discussing the event . and we thought of a possible scenario as a injured vet. who is unfit for further service. I would also like to work with you on housing as well. Perhaps we could be staying with reletives or I could take on another role as well . Interested in your thoughts and or help .

Awesome you are bringing your sons!!!! I don't know the last time there was an event with a schoolhouse and schoolmaster, (and he plays a pretty good fiddle!). I would have to think the more kids in school the better. Sure Ms. S, will find you and yours a role.

Best Regards...
