The Plan: "This event is being hosted by the Armory Guards and the Salt River Rifles. It will be held at the same location as past events and includes recreated earth works and gun emplacements along part of the original defenses of Atlanta. The Armory Guards will be portraying the Confederate forces representing Company A of the 66th Georgia Infantry with the Salt River Rifles portraying the Federals. Unlike years past, we will be able to be there all weekend. This is the only event that will commemorate the 145th Anniversary of the Battle of Atlanta on the anniversary weekend and on the original ground where the fighting occurred."

No, we won't be marching and burning, it will be infantry drill, artillery drill, and improving the works, but the East Atlanta society wants us to put on a jam up living history and we actually get a LOT of visitors that know their history. The East Atlanta folks are very good to us. Yup it is July in the ATL, be prepared to swear like the men of the AOT and Uncle Billy's Boys did in 1864.

We are looking at a max of 40 Cornfeds and around 20 Blue Boys.

As for you kit, think summer 1864 AOT and AOtT.

I'll say this. This is the only type of LH of its kind within the Atlanta city limits. Yes Virginia, there will be more info coming along soon.

I am personally very excited by this event because it has a very personal connection to me. My Great Great Grandfather, Briggs H. Napier, was the Captain of Company A of the 66th Georgia. He was shot in the leg while trying to remove General Stevens body from the Battlefield at Peachtree Creek. I still have his sword. If the weather is not bad, I will bring it to this event.

I don't know if any of ya'll were ever part of the old Atl History Center programs before a certain individual went to work there and ruined the opportunity before he got run off. I did it for about 8 years or so. at the peak they would get about 7000 spectators over the 2-day weekend, according to the event staff. Someone referenced an educated crowd might be at this event. If you get the same people at this one, you had better be ready. Nobody asked if you were hot, or if you really fought in the Civil war. Here's the typical sort of question we would get. "While it is obvious that the enlisted federal soldiers had a stake in the pending national elections, and there is documentation that they not only discussed but actually campaigned for presidential votes among themselves, do you find that the southern soldiers were aware enough of the issues to debate the consequences within their ranks?"
Damn that was a fun event.

The site is nowhere near the Atlanta History Center. It is actually within a few hundred feet of Bald Hill (now an interstate interchange) and a couple of blocks from where the shooting started on July 22, 1864.

I would highly recommend reading William R. Scaifes's "The Campaign for Atlanta". Pages 65-72 especially tell what happened in the area where the event is held. It is an honor to help recreate what went on here in Atlanta on July 22, 1864.
The "Western Theater" has been woefully neglected by many writers who seem to feel that if is not ANV related then it doesn't matter. We know better.
Sometimes Atlanta itself seems to try to wipe out any vestige of it's "politically incorrect history" That cannot be allowed to happen.

Sherman’s unsuccessful attempts to dislodge Johnston from the Kennesaw Line convinced him to explore alternatives to direct assaults on the rebel entrenchments. A break in the weather and improved conditions on the roads in the area provided the opportunity the Federal commander had been waiting for and, on July 2, Schofield and McPherson had repositioned themselves to interpose between Johnston and Atlanta on the Confederate flank. Realizing that his position was now untenable, Johnston withdrew that same day, eventually forming a new line of defense on the north side of the Chattahoochee River. However, less than a week had elapsed before Sherman once again flanked his opponent out of his positions, crossing the river five miles north of Johnston’s position at the mouth of Sope Creek. Johnston was forced to retire to works behind Peachtree Creek where he prepared to counterattack Sherman as he came up on Atlanta. At long last Johnston thought he saw an opportunity to fight the decisive battle of the campaign. However, on the evening of July 17th Johnston received a telegram from Richmond relieving him of command. President Jefferson Davis was frustrated with Johnston’s repeated withdrawals and his apparent unwillingness to fight the invaders. Influenced by a stream of criticisms of Johnston’s performance by his advisor, Braxton Bragg, and John Bell Hood, Davis finally decided to turn command of the Army of the Tennessee over to Hood. When he heard of the change, Sherman was elated. Schofield, who had attended West Point with Hood told Sherman, "He’ll hit you like hell, now, before you know it." Aggressive, even foolhardy action from the commander of a force that was numerically inferior was just what the Union command wanted. As Schofield had predicted, the Federals didn’t have long to wait. On July 20th Hood launched an uncoordinated set of attacks, roughly following Johnston’s original plans, near Peachtree Creek. However, all of the Confederate assaults were repulsed with severe losses. Hood immediately planned a second thrust, this time to the east against McPherson who was approaching Atlanta from Decatur. As Hardee arrayed his battle lines in preparation to attack McPherson, Confederate Gen. William Walker was killed by Federal pickets. The Confederates fiercely attacked, and within hours had broken through the Federal line and were threatening their opponents’ rear. Gen. McPherson attempted to coordinate a defense but rode into a gap in his lines and was surrounded by rebels. Instead of surrendering, he waved and rode off, only to be shot dead from his horse. Sherman and his commanders rallied their broken troops, and, in a maelstrom of the most intense fighting of the campaign, were successful in recapturing their trenches and in beating off the Confederates who retired to their entrenchments around Atlanta. In three days Hood had lost almost 13,000 men, crippling his army, and Sherman’s army now closely invested Atlanta and began to shell the city at close range.

That's a great link that you posted. The website has the remaining "highlights" around Atlanta. A quick overview of Atlanta with Google Earth will also net some photos.

Just to let everyone Gilliam Park is a small green space surrounded by a homes and schools. Most of us Civil War buffs know this, but there are still some small areas that give you hints of what the terrain was like in 1864.

We'll be conducting a small memorial service at the Walker and McPherson monuments during the weekend as well. With a Confederate contingent heading to the Walker monument and the Federal contingent going to the McPherson monument.

Well by amazing circumstance, Keith Bohannon was in a rare bookstore in the DC area last week and stumbled on a copy of Gilham's Manual inscribed: Presented to B.H. Napier by Stanford E. Chaille Aug. 2d 1863.

Briggs Napier was commander of Co. A 66th Ga and my great great grandfather. Since this manual was presented to him at the same time the 66th was being formed and we know several Georgia units used Gilham's, I think we can assume safely that at least Co. A of the 66th was using that manual.

Now I need to come up with $1,500 to buy the Manual from the book store. It would be great to reunite the sword and manual carried by Capt. Napier.

Kiev and I had a good visit to the LH area today with the East Atlanta folks. The works are actually going to be extended a little.

I have to let everyone know that we are closing the registration for the Confederates now. We were asked to cut it down to 25 and we have 25. I would love to have more folks out there, but the area is of course surrounded by homes since it is Atlanta. So basically registration is closed.

If folks drop out and we have spaces open up for either side I'll post here.

The Federals will be portraying the 39th Ohio. This regiment lost 1/3 of its number during the battle. Advancing forward with the 27th Ohio, they pushed back the Confederates only to then be put in a difficult position under enfilading fire. In addition, they were dangerously low on ammunition. The laid down in this exposed position for 20 minutes before being pulled back and resupplied. The 39th captured Nisbet in the fight.

We will be portraying Company B, 'Koenigs' German Rifles'. Interestingly, their Capt was John Gallaher who had been previously wounded, captured and inprisoned at Libby. He led an escape from Libby and rejoined his regiment.

Major William Mercey of the 81st Ohio describes the Confederate assault...



"Nor can I restrain a tribute to the bravery of the enemy...they came tearing wildly through the woods with the yells of demons. We had an advantage in artillery: they in numbers. Their assaults were repulsed only to be fearlessly renewed, until the sight of dead and wounded lying in their way, as they charged again and again to break our line, must have appalled the strongest hearts. So persistent were their onslaughts that numbers were made prisoners by rushing directly into our lines."

My thanks to those who attended the living history this weekend. The Kirkwood/East Atlanta organizers were thrilled to have us portraying civilians, Federals, and Johnnys out at Gilliam Park.

Many of the community/neighborhood ogranizers and the area's city councilwoman were impressed and pleased with our programs this weekend. This is a GOOD thing since the City of Atlanta has a bad habit of brushing over its Civil War history.

And yes I planned the unseasonally cool weather this weekend.

I sure had a great time and can't thank Herb, Tripp, Mr. Mitchell and all the Armory Guards together with Jim Butler and the Salt River Rifles enough.

There seemed to be a pretty good visitor interest and questions on the early banjos and music (and I am a banjo hack !!!!). I really enjoyed the night jam with Kiev on the bones and Pete / Marvin belting out those lead vocals.

It was good to meet you, and it was good to see Chris Rideout back in action again.

The Good: Great impressions, good interpretation on all sides, great spectator interest, high ups in the neigborhood want us back!

The Bad: I can't control what the visitors wear, So Marvin's "new buddy" and The She-Colonel had every right to visit. With the obvious low key grumbling, all participants were top notch pros about this issue.

It's great to have this level of cross border support between our groups. It was the first event for our newest member Tyler Scott and it was good to demonstrate field skills to him as well.

The Siege lines, were impressive and it's too bad they can't be enlarged, the hosts and visitors were outstanding and the local press was very polite and friendly. I like the couple that showed up with the bulldog and the guy was wearing a "Georgia Tech" t-shirt.

In regard to Mr. Rebel Forever, I asked him who his Confederate Ancestors were. He did not know, instead he liked the Confederates because of what they fought for in regards to "modern" politics. I replied that if he really wanted to honor those men, he would write their story and preserve their history. Wearing a cheap t-shirt doesn't impress anyone.

In regards t o our lady Cavalry officer she stated that she wanted to volunteer with the AHC and that's a good way to learn. That's the whole point of an LH, educating folks and encouraging them to get involved.

Speaking of photos, I have posted several on the Armory Guard website. They include some of our private Cyclorama Tour on Sunday. It is amazing to see that painting up close. You really get an idea of how truly grand it is.

Now on a more personal note. This was a special event for me. This was the first time I was able to portray my Great Great Grandfathers unit the 66th GA Company A. So it really meant a lot to me that we had folks willing to come from all over to attend this event and that put the effort into making sure their impressions were dead on. That goes for everyone Federal and Confederate alike. I was proud to be part our group this weekend and I know the men we honored appreciated it as well. Thank you all!!

It was awesome. I would love to sit at a table with some white gloves on and take a closer look in the future. For those that do not know how he got it, ask him sometime. Gentlemen:

I am sorry that I had to cut my time short this weekend with my grey-clad brethren, but our 'four-legged' child had to have emergency surgery at the vet hospital Saturday, which she has come out of successfully I am very happy to report. Although I shall not be purusing the Wanting to Sell forum anytime soon after that bill.
I am happy I did get an opportunity to participate in this great event for the time I had, seeing many of the great folks involved with this effort whom I am privileged to already know, and meeting many new pards I look forward to seeing again in the near future. So, until that scant 145(?) days away...
