Does anyone know where I can find CDs or tapes of Southern Pre-war songs that Confederate soldiers sang or could have sung? I'm looking for songs that don't have anything to do with the war but were sung by confederate soldiers.

Go to the Orchard Hill Sutlery Site http://www.orchardhillsutlery.com/ and go to their music section. On that page check out the Free and Accepted Minstrels of Old New Orleans, it's a good collection of songs that fits what you're looking for.

If you like to "roll your own" a great place to start is the Lester S. Levy Sheet Music Collection (http://levysheetmusic.mse.jhu.edu/) which has "over 29,000 pieces of music and focuses on popular American music spanning the period 1780 to 1960". For the music before 1923 you can get images of the cover and each page of the music. Pick a year and you can find all sorts of things to try.

May I also suggest Marty Liebschner. He has several good cd's and books available as well as minstrel banjos.
