Here's a wonderful piece that just came up for auction with great documentation:

So who's going to be the first one to reproduce one of those? I'd get in line for one.

That thing has been floating around for a long time...it's in EoG, formerly owned by Jim Stamatelos, sat at the Horse Soldier for years, so on and so on.

I've always believed that it was a heavily modified uniform coat. It was obviously cherished by the soldier who wore it for so long.

Cowan's had this coat at the Gettysburg relic show earlier this year. It was nice to see it up close but they were not allowing pictures of it. Maybe they'll have it there again this weekend at the show.

It wouldn't be hard to reproduce on your own as long as you don't mind cutting up a $500 frock!

If I'm going to spend $40-50K on a coat, it should at least have buttons! :D Seriously, that's a nice looking jacket...IMHO a better looking style than the fatigue blouse.

I had an opportunity to look at the jacket up close and personal when it was being displayed by the auction house that was selling it. When I was talking with the auction house rep he was telling me he thought it was some kind of militia jacket or whatever because of the color of the piping and so forth. I told him that the piping was evidently infantry blue when issued and then faded over time and that it was a standard infantry jacket (frock coat minus the skirt) with a breast pocket added. Not militia and not unusual. Yeah it's been kicking around awhile.
