SC Civilian Shirt-ID'd to Pvt. James Owens, 7th SCC.

Oral history states Owens' mother made this shirt and sent it to him in Virginia. He never had an opportunity to wear it as he was dead from disease by the time it arrived. The shirt is made from a thick woolen/silk drapery fabric and is heavily machine sewn.

4/1/04: About 20 more photos to add of this shirt, will get them up by the weekend (I hope).

heavily machine sewn.
"heavily" being the operative word here!! The only hand stitches are those in the buttonholes. All other stitches are machine chain stitches. This is, in all cases visible on the inside of the shirt only, with the exception of the collar (you can note that on Neill's collar image.).
This is a very large shirt as well, akin to today's XL.
How about the "big Johnson" drawer's Neill? Should I forward them??

I don't want to overwhelm Paul but I think you have those on digital, correct? Hey post them when possible as I think people would find them interesting. Really, I owe the RR and the other institutions a big thanks for letting us post these images. There is no substitute for research and the viewing of original articles. The more we partner with historical entities the further this "hobby" will progress. Post away!

Hello Master Rose! Got a question. Say I took the little woman for a visit to Columbia; what are the hours of visitation at the RR weekends? Any cool stuff visible to the public now of individual soldier's relics? And I haven't been there since they moved. Do they have a web page?

Hey Mark,

The RR is open on weekends now but I'll let Joe catch you up on hours, etc. Yes, there are numerous items on display of interest including the Atlanta jacket, Kelley frock, I&C bag, etc., etc. I can't say enough about their interp currently. They also have one excellent manequin of a SC soldier during the Sharpsburg campaign. I think y'all would greatly enjoy everything. This particular shirt is on display also in the "Death & Mourning" exhibit. Hope you're doing well otherwise. Feel free to email me off line also.

Happy to make your acquaintance! Satudays: 10:00 through 5:00, just like Tuesday-Friday. Sundays: we're only open the FIRST Sunday of each month, 1-5 in the afternoon, but on that day we charge you just a buck rather than the usual extortionate rate of $3.00 (adults; "kids" under 21 are free).
