John Wayne Athey

John Wayne Athey, 59, of Deming, N.M., formerly of Front Royal, died April 4, 2010, as he was being flown by medical transport for emergency treatment of an extremely rare blood disease he’d been fighting for 22 years.

There will be a memorial service in Deming, N.M. Mr. Athey will be laid to rest in Rockland Cemetery, Front Royal, at a future date.

Mr. Athey was born Oct. 10, 1950, in Arlington, Va., the son of the late George B. and Orville Morrison Athey of Front Royal and Arlington. After graduation from Yorktown High School in Arlington, he served in the U.S. Army, the U.S. Army Reserves and the U.S. Navy. He was involved with the Civil War Reenactments and the Mountain Men Rendezvous in Virginia. Before moving to New Mexico he lived in Arlington, Front Royal and Compton, Va.

Surviving are his wife, Terry Athey, of Deming, N.M.; and his sister, Georgana Athey Holland of Warrenton.
