HENRY FISHBURNE TO INTRODUCE MORRIS ISLAND RESOLUTION
First District Charleston City Councilman Henry Fishburne announced
today that he will introduce a resolution at the next Charleston City
Council Meeting to oppose any development beyond current standards on
Morris Island. Councilman Fishburne is following the lead of James
Island Town Councilman Joe Qualey who introduced a similar resolution in
the James Island Town Council last week.
"I believe that Morris Island is hallowed ground and should not be
developed. The area was the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of
the Civil War and is the final resting place for thousands of soldiers
from both sides. Developing the area would be disrespectful to their
memory," Councilman Fishburne stated. "Morris Island must be preserved
and I will work with Councilman Qualey, the Morris Island Coalition and
others to protect it."
Attached is a copy of the resolution that will be introduced on April
13, 2004.

Whereas, Morris Island is a historically significant landmark in
Charleston County;
Whereas, Morris Island was the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of
the Civil War with thousands of lives lost on both sides;
Whereas, Morris Island is an ecologically sensitive barrier island;
Whereas, Morris Island is an undisturbed resting place for migratory
shorebirds;
Whereas, Charleston County has designated the island as a resource
management area and has zoned it appropriately;
Whereas any development beyond what it is currently zoned for would
jeopardize the historical and cultural character and the islands
sensitive ecosystem;
We, the City Council of the City of Charleston, hereby resolves to
oppose any development proposals or actions that would lead to
development beyond the resource management development standards as laid
in the Charleston County Comprehensive Plan.
