I was wondering how comman an item this would be: a Confederate forage cap with the McDowell brim. Options are Eastern v. Western; early war v. mid to late war. While I know to be strictly authentic would depend on what a soldier in a specific unit wore, most of the accounts that I have read just referred to a "cap" or the "soft slouch hat" or similar description. I am looking for generalities here. Colors, buttons, etc are also questions that I would like addressed.

Thank you,

Gil,

I am unaware of any "McDowell" type caps manufactured by the Confederate QM. Speaking in general terms, all the extant originals I am aware of are either privately purchased officers caps or early war items.

As an aside, your quote is actually an 18th century quote. I suspect the Alabamian to whom it is attributed was actually quoting one of his revolutionary heroes.
