I would like to solicit suggestions for the best fife & drum recording currently available on CD. I see many, but as always, unsure of quality when viewed just by title.
I'm trying to find a first rate recording of 'Hell on the Wabash' & 'Frog in the Well"

The 2nd Maryland Fife and Drums are outstanding (the best in my opinion) as are the Camp Chase Fife and Drums. I have all their CD's and you won't be disappointed with any of them. I don’t have the CD’s in front of me to tell you specifically which volumes to buy in order to get the songs you mentioned, but you can easily find it. I don’t have a copy of the 119th NY’s CD but I hear its good and I plan to get one. I also hear the 3rd NJ is a good band and they have a CD out as well. I don’t know if the songs you asked for are on either of these latter CD’s.
Now for a shameless plug.
We (the 125th OVI Tiger Band) have just released our first CD “Marching through Georgia”, and both tracks are on it. You can visit our site at http://tigerband.stephenscott.com and preview a few of our songs (unfortunately the one’s you asked for aren’t among them). The opening page of the site also has two cuts from the CD as background music (but you have to let it download for a few minutes) and once it’s downloaded, it will be instantaneous the next time you visit the site (as are the preview songs).
Hope this helps narrow your search.
Note: I am not an authorized vender on this site, so moderators please ammend, move or remove this post if my invitation to preview our site and our music is not in keeping with forum rules.

One fife and drum corp that gets overlooked all the time is the Old Line FDC. They are not as active now but they were the National Reigments music for a long time. THey also put out a great cd about 5 years ago called "Bully for You." THey are on the same level as 2nd MD in my opinion. The 119th cd is ok but they have lots of work to do ahead of them. They are still learning being so young.

I've only listened to a few recordings, but I think Camp Chase's albums are the best. Volume 1 has Wabash & Frog(tape only, no cds for vol.1). Camp Chase & the 2nd Maryland were the corps featured on Gettysburg, I believe, and they played both tunes on the film.
Another good recording is by George Carroll, available on beafifer.com, but it only has Wabash on it.

Yes Camp Chase is looking to put vol. 1 on CD - maybe this fall. We are probably going to make a new vol. 4 Cd as well.

Ron,
You can find both tunes on our CD "It's Those Marylanders Again!" (Green cover w/ MD flag) The Visitors Center at Gettysburg NMP should have it. I think you'll find it satisfactory. Camp Chase F&D's has good versions of them as well.

Walter Sweet's Complete music for fife and drum CD is a good recording if you want variety,(79 songs) but it sounds somewhat plain for some reason. You want Camp Chase though if you want a very good recording of Frog in the well and Hell on the Wabash. Camp Chase sounds haunting and like your right beside them.
