Battle of Perryville 150th Anniversary
October 5 – 7, 2012
The 150th Anniversary of Perryville is coming up. Event information and impression guidelines will be forthcoming at www.perryvillebattlefield.org The guidelines listed on the park website are the minimum standards for participation. Park staff has completed hundreds of hours of research on the typical soldier in the Army of Mississippi and the Army of the Ohio and will work with groups interested in tailoring impressions to specific regiments that fought at Perryville – do not hesitate to contact them.
Planning is under way and arrangements have been made for various living history opportunities. There is an opportunity for preservation march for both the Confederate and Union Armies, if you are interested in this please contact me immediately. The routes are being completed now and land agreements are being finalized. Approximately 1,000 acres of land are available for the event.
Perryville has long offered reenactors a quality historical experience. Progressive organizations have been a constant presence at this pristine battlefield for 20 years. There is a strong commitment to enhance this effort by the park and the reenactor coordinators. We invite you to participate and make this the best progressive event in the West for 2012.
Preservation efforts are ongoing at Perryville; the park, the Friends of Perryville and the Civil War Preservation Trust are working to acquire and additional 200 acres that surround the historic H.P. Bottom House as well as additional land on Hayes Mayes Rd. including the Russell House site. 100% of reenactor registration goes towards the purchase of this significant historic property.

I know it's a ways off, but are you anticipating any substantial role for Federal cavalry in the event?

Tom,
We are looking for Union Cavalry for 2012. There will be a tactical opportunity that will not be scripted and we certainly could use your guys as we have nearly 1000 acres upon which we will be moving. The scripted scenarios are not worked out just yet, however, the engagements the day before the battle contained considerable cavalry action. Most people are used to doing Parson's and the cornfield at Perryville, but we are going to change it up so that there will be an opporutnity for all arms to engage recreating historical movements on the field.
In addition, we are looking at two major preservation marches that the cavalry certainly can be involved in as well. This will go across property that has not been accessable before utilizing private property along Doctor's Creek and the Chaplin River.
I am sorry you couldn't make the event this past year at Perryville. You can ask any of the guys with the 7th TN. They were well pleased with the effort the park put forth in using them correctly and the park is as committed to do that again in 2012. Frankly I am also looking for someone to really help me with the cavalry as I am a ground pounder. Holler at me over a PM or email.
Thanks,
Chad Greene

It was a blast! We were sickly outnumbered, and yet we fought off the Feds as best we could! Out of all the events we did last year Perryville was my favorite, I look forward to the 150th.

All,
After discussion with te park staff this morning I understand that the AC committee for events decided to place Perryville 150 in the Adjunct folder.
For the sake of saving time and confusion - if you are planning on attending the event please make sure that you read the events standards for participation. I would not want anyone registering for the event without first understanding the way the event will be structured and what the specific standards are. Perryville has basically adopted National Park standards and they will be enforced. These participation guidelines will be posted for the 150th on Perryville's website within the next week; however, the living history standards for 2011 are already posted on the park's site and these will not change for 2012 - other than they will not be as unit specific to allow for other impressions of individual regiments for those who wish to portray those regiments. I advise contacting the park as they have a vast amount of research on regiments both Union and Confederate that were present on the field at Perryville.
So - on to 2012 and hope to see you there.

Everyone:
The event section folders are here for...
1) Hosts and organizers to communicate to participants
2) Participants to get information and ask questions
This is not the place to criticize someone else's events or to raise questions regarding the legitimacy of events or the folders in which they are located.

I for one deeply appreciated the history based event standards that Perryville put up. Site staff and volunteer organizers took a lot of heat for those upgraded standards. Exactly what we as a hobby asked for.
Events are what WE choose to make them.
I look at October of 2012 and see Perryville, then a weekend to rearrange and double pack the truck, Raymond and the Vicksburg Caves, and a day with a houseful of company and a yard full of mules before we are due in Westville on Tuesday night to start bringing folks in by wagon on Wednesday.
Hardly a dismal prospect. And every one of them with enough standards to keep it enjoyable.
Without standards, there might be pirates all over the place......

All,
I appreciate all of the effort put forth by everyone over the last few days to help with the Perryville event listed here for 2012. The living history standards for 2011 are now posted and they will change very little for 2012. They will not be as unit specific as we hope to encourage those who wish to portray different regiments that were at the battle - to do so. We have a large amount of reasearch on both CS and US regiments and certainly encourage each of you to contact park staff to get assistance in your impression.
We are in the final stages of working out exactly what will be happening, but it will certainly include marches into the battlefield and tactical situations for Friday and Saturday.
Please remember that unlike so many places in the United States you are actually on the battlefield for this event. Some 7,500 men were killed and wounded here at Perryville. Every inch of the park and adjoining farm land is core battlefield area - men engaged in a death match that impacted Perryville for years and to some extent still effects the town and its people. I would ask each and everyone of you to consider the importance of this event - not just who has the best uniform or who is in charge of what, but that each dime you as a reenactor spends will go directly to battlefield preservation. We are working on securing the land that encircles the Bottom House all the way up to and including the Dixville Crossroads. This will take somewhere around 2 million dollars to achieve all of this and we are working hard with the CWPT to accomplish that. To that end I ask for cooperation from everyone in making Perryville a great event. Yes it will be a "progressive event" and be ran as one from the military to the civililan living history area. For those of you who have not been here or have not been here for years - things have changed and we are committed to making this a respectuful event - it is truly about the soldiers who fought here and the citizens who had to deal with the death and destruction.
Thanks,

I am trying to gage the interest in forming a adjunt unit representing the 1st or 3rd FL during the 2012 event. I have been in contact with Joni House and she has provided information in regards to these two units. All,
Had a great meeting last week with the park folks. All is going well. Registration should go live on July 1 or shortly after that. The registration price is reduced if you get in before January 1, 2012. All the participant standards are up at www.perryvillebattlefield.org
The preservation march/tactical routes are all done and everything as far as the event is laid out. Please give it a look. This is an extremely rare opportunity for those of you who have been at Perryville - the preservation march route comes into the battlefield from private property. This is the first time that this has been done as the majority of this property is in private hands. This may be your only chance to actually come into Perryville on the actual routes used by the armies. If it is not up on the website yet it will be before the week is over. We secured over 1300 acres for the event. All your money goes to preservation at the park, which has grown to nearly 800 acres plus (we are waiting on some good announcements from CWPT.)
I'm very excited about this event - it simply will be on of the best for 2012.
Come help commemorate Perryville's 150th. The men who fought their do not just deserve our rememberance. They earned it.

The price will increase at the first of the year. We want to let you know that 100% of your registration fees will go directly to the parks preservation efforts. If you have any questions concerning registration for this event, please contact me and I will answer any questions you may have. Thanks.
In order to work on my 2012 kitchen passes, is Perryville going to be the other major East/West AC supported event, on the same level as Shiloh?
Matt Woodburn
08-05-2011, 09:21 AM
Huck,
No, it's not going to be supported on the scale of what we just did. There are good campaign battalions being formed for Perryville on both sides but will just be smaller. The same groups that you were with in Manassas agreed to do one large effort per year due to the work to make it come off well. The 2012 effort is Shiloh, but Perryville will be attended by some of the guys you were just with. There will likely be a folder for Perryville here on the AC soon. Hope that helps.
Thanks Matt, I was under the impression that there was going to be two per year, supported AC events, one east and one west. Im going to Perryville anyway, it is a great event. I just need to start on the wife/honey backside kissing up to do two or three major road trip events .
Now just begs the question, do I go mounted or Inf..........

Do we register under Western Federal Blues plus what is the info on the preservation march......
Huck, as of right now we have two federal campaign battalions being formed. The Western Federal Blues will be fielding one and the other headed up by the SCAR and other groups from the south. Both groups have their own registrations. The Blues on their site www.westernfederalblues.org (http://www.westernfederalblues.org) and SCARS on another http://24thillinoisperryville150th.webs.com/.
The preservation march will be a treat to many. Both armies will be walking on the original routes the boys of '62 took. Some of the land we will be using has never been used before ever! Yes, new land the park has gained access to. So, it will be a neat experience to venture across new hills and fields. Remember, the preservation march will be on that Friday. We are asking everyone who wants to take part in the march to be on site by Thursday evening if possible. That night you will be shutteled out a couple of miles away to your starting point. Pretty much the event will go LIVE sometime Thursday evening.

Huck,
"AC supported" and "supported by the groups that did Manassas" are two different things. I was referring to the groups that just did the 2nd Mississippi at Manassas.
I will be there in full force.....just looking for the "where to hang my hat".

08-08-2011, 09:47 AM
Huck we are glad to have you hang your hat with the Blues. Registration for Perryville is open now and half price. Go to their website at www.perryvillebattlefield.org and follow the registration information. Just indicate your falling in with the Blues on that form. I see Micah has already responded to you so once you get registered get on the Blues Facebook page and forum so you can keep in the loop - Micah can add you on all of that.
The preservation march and tactical is going to be something to remember. The best thing about Perryville is that all of your preservation money goes directly to the park for preservation and interpretation.
Happy to have you on board!

Just a couple of minor corrections in regards to the 24th Illinois Battalion at Perryville. First, it is a combined effort of groups...Armory Guards, Independent Rifles, Trans-Miss, Hairy Nation, 48th NY an Eastern company and SCAR (one addtional company may also be addede). For the 24th Illinois Battalion, you will need to register thru our website at http://24thillinoisperryville150th.webs.com/ as our registration covers the registration fee, rations and a donation to the 'Friends of Perryville'. As Micah has pointed out, the early fee ends at the end of Dec. We also plan to take part in the preservation march and tactical.

All,
If you are going on the preservation march/tactical please make sure you indicate that on the registration form that the park has on the website. That is essential so that we know how many to expect. This will be a very interesting aspect to the event. The sites that both armies will start out at is remote and we will need to have an idea of who is actually going. You will be met with guides in the staging areas and then marched to the remote site. This is the first time in 150 years that these routes have been used by military forces moving toward the battlefield at Perryville. Get your legs up underneath you and lets make this one of the finest soldier experience in reenacting.
It is going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity so don't miss it.

I have been sitting on this information for about a month. I knew about it at Manassas, but was sworn to secrecy. The CWT has entered into a contract with the gentlemen who own the farm surrounding the Bottom House. The CWT just went live with their appeal today. They just started the appeal and it looks like the land will be transfered in the spring of 2012.
Saying all of this. Your registration money save the .75 cents we are paying to the webfolks for taking care of the registration will go 100% into helping with this effort. There will be much work to be done on that land including the interpretation and returning it to its battlefield appearance. In addition and with after talking with the park this morning we feel that the Federal side of the preservation will take place partially on this land. There will be another big announcement from the Civil War Trust later with some other great news!
If you did not have a reason to come to Perryville in 2012 you sure do now! You can be sure that your money will go to the preservation and interpretation of the park. Please check out the CWT's appeal at www.civilwar.org/perryville11 to learn more about the land and the appeal.
The Western Federal Blues and the Friends of Perryville Battlefield are partnering to make this a great event and now it is for the best cause in the world. How many of you have been to the Bottom's House and thought how great it would be to be on the farm around that house. Now YOU CAN HELP MAKE THAT HAPPEN!
Be looking for more information on the event and also please check out the Western Federal Blues on Facebook as we are raising a battalion for the Perryville 2012 event.

All,
Perryville's 150th planning is well underway. The Preservation March/Tactical routes are secure. If you participate in this part of the event you will be on land that hasn't been accessable for the last 150 years. Truly the last time an individual dressed in a Civil War uniform was on this ground was in October of 1862.
Every dime of your registration money will go the presevation and interpretation of the battlefield. Your money will not go for event logistics - the Commonwealth of Kentucky is picking up that bill. You will be upon one of the most pristinely preserved battlefields in the United States and have the privelage of reenacting this battle upon the ground which our honored ancestors fought and died upon.
Please join us and help with the preservation of this hallowed ground. I invite you to attend the 150th Annivesary of the Battle of Perryville on October 5-7, 2012!

Bill,
There most certainly is room for Federal cavalry! I have been asked to head up the Federal cavalry this year, and I am working on some things to make this the best Perryville yet in terms of the cavalry participation. We have a good number of authentic folks from acrocss the country coming together for this one. We will have the march in on Friday, and a variety of cool living history experiences through the weekend. We will participate in the battles, but they won't be the highlight of our event. This is the link to the Perryville 150th Event registraiton list http://www.friendsofperryville.org/html/registration_spreadsheet.html
Please check this site if you registered through the on-line registration or sent registraiton into the park.
We switched the format and I want to make sure everyone that has registered is on that list.
This does not include anyone who is registering through special units like the WFB or the 24th Ill. or any other organization that is also taking money for rations etc. If you registered through these units before the early registraiton cut off you should be on the list. If you are not on that list contact the registration link on the website or you can email Joni at the park and we will get you straightened out.

Preservation March and Tactical
During the early afternoon hours of October 8, 1862 two opposing military forces assembled to engage in what would become knows as the Battle of the Chaplin Hills or Perryville! They fought across a landscape that would forever be changed by their actions. Preservation efforts are on-going at Perryville and large tracts of land upon which the armies engaged are now being actively protected and interpreted.
If you are a reenacting participant at Perryville’s 150th Anniversary Event you have the chance to assemble with the army and advance to engage in a preservation march and tactical experience that is a once in a lifetime opportunity. If you would like to take advantage of this experience please indicate your intentions on your registration form.
The preservation march and tactical will start on Thursday afternoon. Registration will open at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday October 4, 2012 and you will be able to complete registration and proceed to the remote locations that will serve as assembly areas for the march. Guidance to these areas will be posted at reenactor registration. The march will commence early on Friday morning and the tactical is expected to last throughout the day on Friday. All branches are highly encouraged to attend. Organizations and individuals are welcome and invited to participate!
The Union and Confederate forces will enter the tactical area upon routes that have not been used by Civil War soldiers for 150 years. Please help us ensure that these areas are protected. We challenge each and every one of you who are going to participate in this rare venture to donate to http://www.civilwar.org/battlefields/perryville/perryville-2012/

It will place you on actual routes the real boys took in '62. It will not be your typical bang bang shoot'em up. There will be objectives each army must meet during this march. It will test how well commanders can follow orders and how well the soldier can stand to the test. The things we have planned for the Preservation March is a rare opportunity for you. What you will experience may never happen again there.
We hope to see you there. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via PM or email at federalslouch @ yahoo dot com.

All who are attending Perryville please get registered. Registration is ticking along, but we don't want to have some issue with the online registraiton 2 days before the deadline. It will take you 10 minutes to get registered and if you have issues please contact the park and they will get you taken care of.
Remember all of your registration money goes to the park for preservation and interpretation. You can make a difference and have fun at the same time.
Please do not wait - get registered.
Thanks,
Chad Greene

The Road to Perryville
Joseph P. Glezen, 80th Indiana, Webster’s brigade, Jackson’s division:
“We were ordered to (ride and fire)… Bullets were whistling over me with such fury it seemed as if no man could stand erect and live. But at the word of command, we all bounded to our fee…determined to pour the contents of our muskets into the ranks of our ungodly opposers…. It was necessary to advance about two rods (33 feet) to the top of the hill in order to bring our arms to bear against he enemy… They kept so well concealed behind trees that only a few could be seen….As we advanced to give the first fire I did not… relish the music of the relics as they whistled around my ears. … At the word fire we all pulled triggers together and then were directed to load and fire at will. Many of our guns were defective and when I rammed down my second cartridge I discovered my gun contained to loads. I reprimed…and thought I would ‘double the dose’ by firing two balls at once; buy my gun again refused to fire. I retired down the hill, took off the tube (nipple), picked the powder in the touch hole, primed, advanced and made a third effort to fire, but in vain. I then threw down my gun in disgust, picked up another, tried it with a ramrod and found it like mine-containing two loads. I picked up the second and it was in the same condition – the third ditto – the fourth had lead just about one food from the muzzle. I then concluded to get out of the way myself, as I did not like to be a target for traitors without at least an equal chance at them. So I went down about four rods (66 feet) and laid down behind a stump with a couple of wounded from my company.”

Thanks guys for wanting me to do Fed with ya, and as an Illinois kid, I would. However, I sold off all my Fed clothing and gear during my financial crisis (which I'm still in). This is why it would be much easier for me to go CS.

The Road to Perryville
Captain Malone, staff of Maney’s brigade, Cheatham’s division:
“Several of the enemy’s guns were loaded and fired while we were making the charge, and it seems to me that the one pointed at the 41st Georgia was fired after George (his horse) and I passed the battery. Old George wasn’t afraid of anything … except a wagon. He had been injured, when a colt, by a runaway wagon. …Just as the 9th and I were passing through the guns George spied a caisson, and suddenly wheeling and rearing, nearly unseated me. Several of the 9th rushed out of line, calling out: “The captain’s killed,” and sized old George. …Neither George nor I received a scratch.”
