Confederate prisoners at Five Forks

I've never seen this image and wondered if any of you have seen it. It has some great details, unfortunately I could not zoom in without losing clarity. Found it on the LOC site and it was titled "Confederate prisoners taken at Five Forks" enjoy

This photo has been published in a number off books. The silver bound time life series comes to mind.

There is a nice enlargement of this photo printed and hung on the wall of the Five Forks visitor center. It shows some incredible detail, such as those uncovered bullseye canteens hanging off the rebs. It's almost worth a visit just to closely eyeball that old photograph once in a while.

Last sumer Dean Nelson and I were looking at some of his stereo cards through his original stereo viewer. This photo was just incredible in stereo! The dips and depression in the terrain make the Confederates appear much smaller than they actually are, as they are on a downward sloping piece of ground. There is one man in the middle right, turned around glaring at the camera, and in stereo you can tell that he was one huge boy. I also loved the Yankee guard in the foreground picking his nose!

It is a great photo, I always like the;

Beaten headgear (one man is wearing a dutch cap/ visor cap)
Blanket rolls & Knapsacks (don't start that BS line about 'rebs loaded up on gear before going to prison' :sarcastic )
The prevalence of federal canteens
The stupid federal guards turning away from the prisoners so they can get their picture taken (WATCH OUT boys! The rebs will escourglagate you! :tounge_sm )

Charles' is right...there really is no better blow-up of that than at the Five Forks visitor center. Dean Nelson has a true gem in that original.

Speaking of prisoner photos, the below attachment shows interesting extracts from "Chattanooga, Tenn. Confederate prisoners at railroad depot]" from the LOC site. This image, as far as I know, was made in either late 1863 or sometime in 1864. Of most immediate interest are the blanket roll worn by the Federal guard, in the right foreground of the first image, and the "belt bag" worn by the Confederate POW in the center of the second image (the one leaning on a walking stick with his back to the camera).

That is a great picture. I have seen it before as well, in at least a couple of publications. I sure wish I could get it blown up clearly on my computer; images of confederates as they appear in the field are so few, precious, and far between; there is a lot to be learned from them. I have to chuckle, though; the federal guard at middle-distance ("nose-picker") looks like he is in the middle of a cell phone conversation! Not a very scholarly observation, but worth a smile ;-)

This one focuses on a group of uncovered US (or possibly CS copies) canteens on a group of prisoners.

Note that the Federals are heavy artillery troops and the foremost Yank is picking his nose.
