War Between the States.
Dutchy,
The Federal Veteran Reserve Corps. What an outfit, the fellows liked the army but not being shot, so they re-upped in the VRC to serve in back areas, hospitals and prison camps. Their sky-blue uniforms set them apart and caused ridicule yet most did their duty well and served long after the war concluded. A VRC unit met Early when he attacked Washington D.C, in 1864 and a unit (two regiments) guarded Camp Douglas in Chicago and helped foil an escape attempt by Confederate prisoners during the 1864 Presidential election. For years people who have seen the photograph of the Presidential Reviewing Stand at the Grand Review in 1865, Washington, D.C., were puzzled why Confederate troops seemed stationed at the foot of the stand. They were VRC!

Steve Sullivan

My understanding is that the VRC was composed of men who had already been wounded or disabled in service, but were still willing to serve their country--hence their original title, Invalid Corps. You make it sound as though the corps was filled with cowards who were afraid of frontline service. I'm researching a possible ancestor who served in two different combat units (infantry and cavalry) before he transferred to the VRC. His pension file includes statements by friends and commanders that show he was a brave and dedicated soldier.

I hasten to add that I'm not attacking you, Mr. Sullivan. Just don't want anyone to be mislead about the VRC.

* Fagan's 1st Arkansas Infantry Reg't. (served in Virginia from June 1861 to March 1862... s'matter of fact, they were at 1st Manassas while the 3rd was still straggling into Lynchburg to muster in; most surviving copies of the Arkansas state belt plate trace back to Fagan's people.)

* Bronaugh's 2nd Arkansas Infantry Battalion. (served in Virginia from July 1861 onward & through the Seven Days campaign; survivors consolidated with the 3rd Arkansas Regiment in July, 1862.)

Western--

Definitely like the 80th Indiana VI. Not just because I just found a relative of my Mom's on the rolls, but the guys deserve a lot of respect--they answered Lincoln's '300,000 more' call, then before their training was just quite half-complete the War Department shipped 'em down to Kentucky to meet Bragg and Smith's advance. And even though they were green as grass at Perryville and really took some casualties they aquitted themselves well enough to be mentioned favorably in dispatches.

9th Tennessee Cavalry (CS)...shameless plug for GG-Grandpa R.F. Peek on Dad's side :D

Just started reading about Wilder's Lightning Brigade, trying to learn more about Mounted Infantry, and I'm developing a real respect for the mobility/firepower combination of this outfit.

Hampton Legion... still my favorite.

In that, I mean that as an early war unit, the Hampton Legion has infantry, artillery and cavalry units within it to constitute today what is known as "combined arms"- all branches under one central command. If you want to do impressions of either branch, then you can still do this unit.

H Co. German Volunteers and SC Zouave Volunteers were within the Legion. Wouldn't it be neat to see these units at an early war event? I haven't so far...

Members of the original unit were eventually transferred to other units within the ANV in mid-1862 after it proved to be more useful to consolidate command during the reorganization of the ANV that year. You can do those units' impressions too (Hood's Texas Brigade, the 2nd SC Cavalry when it went independent of the other branches of the Legion).

Something fascinates me that a non-military, wealthy man before the war pretty much bought his own Army through his own private funds (and a little help from English contractors that supplied him) and volunteered for Confederate service to his State.

How noble... that's true grit.

I nary say you'd find a Donald Trump or a Bill Gates buying his own military unit and goig to Iraq to serve as a general these days...

1st Iowa Infantry- hardships and epic marches on the "Lyon Campaign," valor at Wilson's Creek. Fun impression to do (uniform? what uniform?)

2nd Iowa Infantry- charging the works at Donelson, V.P. Twombley and all that. Have not had a chance yet to portray the 2nd in my many years in the hobby but its on my CW "bucket list."

3rd Iowa Infantry- generally chewed up, one of the relatively rare FEDERAL units to be consolidated due to losses (with the 2nd.) Company K was a hometown unit (Cedar Falls.)

9th Iowa Infantry- epic march and heroism at Pea Ridge. Served the last 3 years of the war with "the other" Iowa Brigade, Williamson's. Company G a hometown unit (Waterloo,) 5 members buried about 10 blocks from my house.

11th Iowa Infantry- Hairy Nation "base" impression, so a no-brainer. Valor at Shiloh, Atlanta. member of the famous Crocker's Iowa Brigade.

19th Iowa Infantry- that charge at Prairie Grove gives me goose bumps.

31st Iowa Infantry- a little personal nostalgia here, this was the impression of my first reenacting unit. brave charges at Chickasaw Bluffs, Lookout Mountain. Possibly the first unit in Columbia SC (disputed with another Iowa reg.,) definitely one of the regiments charged with provost that first night in Columbia- you know, the night it burned. Companies A & B were hometown units, B's flag still hangs in a museum 1/2 mile from my house.

39th Iowa Infantry- I have a thing for Corse, and his ear (what was left of it.)

1st Northeast Missouri Home Guard- victors against all odds at Athens. Great fun to portray, for the same reason as I listed for the 1st Iowa. progenitor unit of--

21st Missouri Infantry- first full regiment into the fray at Pittsburg Landing. Quite possibly the worst disciplined regiment in the entire United States Army.

I don't generally like to celebrate rebels, but I do have a soft spot for the Missouri State Guard. There were some who accomplished more, but name one that did so with less.
