Gents-

I posted a lot of photographs of the Civil War display at the Iowa Hisorical Building a little while back.Several of you were interested to see the 1st Iowa Infantry jacket. The pictures I tried to take of the 1st Iowa Infantry frock wouldn't come out clear enough to post. Tried again and got these pics for you to see.

The jacket pictured reportedly was worn by 1st Lieutenant Harvey Graham, Company B, 1st Iowa Volunteers.

Great uniform. Thanks for sharing. I had a g-g-grand uncle who was an officer in the 2nd, and they were also wearing gray uniforms early in the war.

Company B of the Iowa First were the Governor Greys or "Pets" as the other companies called them. They were the ONLY company to wear grey frocks to Missouri. The rest of the companies dropped their militia uniforms to try and be uniformed. Thus, we have by the time of the battle most of the men wearing rags or clothing they had stolen. The museum has another officer frock worn by an officer from Iowa City. If you didn't know any better you would think a Confederate wore it. Once the regiment returned to St.Louis after the battle of Wilson's Creek they were issued new grey uniforms to wear back to Iowa. If you have any questions please feel free to pm me.
