Friends,

Tomorrow (Tuesday the 6th) I will be going to my neighbor's house to examine an original US Forage Cap which was worn by their ancestor. I'm taking my digital camera along to get some good photos of it. Have a nice macro lense on it so I can get fine detail up close.

If you would like to have some of these photos for your own reference, please post here WITH YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS and I will send them out to you as soon as I can.

Photos are from a 4 megapixel camera, so count on a bunch of images at about 750 kb each.

Hi,

Very interesting. These pics might be nice to post. Here in Lafayette, Indiana, the local historical association actually has TWO "Type I" caps (rounded brim) that I have securely identified to men in the 43rd and 76th Indiana Volunteer Infantry regiments, as well as measured and photographed.

The cap belonging to the man who served in the 76th IVI is particularly interesting since he carved his initials into the underside of the brim with a sharp tool. We also have a pretty firm date for when it was issued--late July 1862--since the sum of his wartime service with the 76th IVI mostly consisted of patrolling the Ohio River and harassing pro-secession Kentuckians in July - August 1862.

DOH!

Sorry guys, the cap turned out to be a GAR cap! :(

Here is a picture of the cap.....if anyone would still like images, just post with your email address. I am still going to send photos to those who requested them.

Also, my neighbor said they had a bunch of other stuff from when they cleaned out their old barn, so apparently some stuff is kinda floating around in the family. "Family rumors" of a coat and rifle are kind of drifting about. Their ancestor, John Merwerth, was wounded in the Battle of Cedar Creek and was from PA. If any other items turn up, I will document them and post them here again.

Or a Sons of Veterans cap? 'SV'

I forget the history, but the early version of today's Sons of Union Veterans was, in one form or another, just the Sons of Veterans. Through many changes, including sons of Spanish-American War veterans, the name was changed.

Is that the 'keystone' patch on top?

I think the SV might mean State Volunteers.

Nice picture nonetheless, Paul. See you on the field sometime.

Hey John,

Not sure about the "SV" ...my only question is that the cap was owned by the veteran, not the son of a veteran (as far as the family knows).

And here is a close up of the keystone on the top. It was sewn on with brown thread with 3 big stitches.

What does the 233 stand for? Could it some how be Span-Am war related since when they formed regiments they just continued the numbers from where the stopped in the Civil War.

My bet is that SV is for the Sons. If I recall, the original name was Sons of Veterans, and wasn't changed to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War until quite a bit later. The 233 is probably the post number.

Just checked the history page at http://www.suvcw.org/suv.htm and here is what they have to say:

"The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War was a creation of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) which was formed in 1866. Wanting to pass on its heritage, the GAR in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania created a Corps of Cadets in 1878 which later became the Sons of Veterans of the United States of America (SV). This latter organization was formed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 12, 1881. The SV units functioned much as National Guard units and actually served along with state militia during the Spanish American War. In 1904, the SV elected to become a patriotic education society and in 1925 changed its name to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW). "
