Just a warning before you get flamed....their stuff has been discussed on here before...and if you have a desire to be more authentic...stay away....

Skillet Licker offers one. I've been told it's top notch quality. I only wish I had a reason to get one.

I got mine from Becky Nall of Cotton City Tailors. They make some of the best jackets and trousers, give them a try. http://www.cottoncitytailors.com/

Additionaly:

Tim Arnold, of FarbNoMore Historical Clothiers. The website is here: http://farbnomore.tripod.com/

His Mystery Depot and Dept. of Alabama Jackets can be found here: http://farbnomore.tripod.com/id22.htm

I have one of his Mystery Depot Jackets, and am very pleased with it.

Tim's a good fellow, and when he isn't in Iraq fighting for Uncle Sam, he's making good items. :)

Try Fred Baker, he makes them for the Skillet Licker. He has been praised from England to California and points in between on his fine work.

I would have to agree with Dusty. I got a Alabama Jacket and blue jean trowsers from him and the workmanship is awesome and at a good price.

I had never heard of these guys, so went to the site just to see. Immediately the radars went up when I saw their prices; too cheap, so that told me no handsewn anything, possibly inferior design based off "something". No description of work, type of cloth used or whose cloth they used immediately makes me suspicious. Tinware is always a good indicator so went there, saw they carried stainless and immediately closed the site. Stay away. I have jackets and trowsers from Skillet Licker, CJ Daley and Cotton City. Stick with them or other reputable makers.

From their site:

Description of RD III:

"With nine "Old English" (Script) I buttons fitted to the front. Six piece jacket construction, made from good quality military weight Hainsworth wool, fully lined in off-white muslin. Exceptional quality."

$65.00.

First off, you can't even buy enough Hainsworth wool to make a jacket for $65. Second, muslin lining is incorrect for RD products.

Owen,

You haven't read the Les Jensen article yet, have you?
http://www.military-historians.org/company/journal/confederate/confederate-1.htm
If you had, you wouldn't have to ask questions about Cyber Sutler.

Further, there is some misinformation currently circulating about Dept of Ala jackets. Is there an event website somewhere that advocates their use? Here is what Jensen has to say on that particular jackets usage:

"The last group of jackets to be covered here (Dept of Alabama jackets) are all associated with units of the Army of Tennessee that were assigned to Richard Taylor's Department of Alabama after the abortive Nashville campaign. Taylor noted the efforts to resupply these troops in his memoirs as occurring in February, 1865."

If somebody has solid documentation linking these jackets to other units/theaters/campaigns, I'm sure I'd love to see it and many others would too.

Are you looking for a "Demopolis" jacket or a "Mobile/Mystery" jacket? Depending on the unit, theater, and time period are you portraying, other jackets may fit your bill better. At any rate, Charlie Childs, as well as the other vendors previosly mentioned produce garments that will suit your needs.

<strike>Yes, I did. They never filled my order. Never returned my calls or e-mails. After a month and a half of no communication from them, I finally cancelled my order. Too bad, they have good prices.

Hallo Herr Brian! Welcome to the AC Forum! Your reply has been edited for "Farb Content." Please review the threads on the Approved Vendor List and Approved Vendors. "Price" while a factor among others, can be viewed as part of a "mix" along with "customer service." However, when it comes to concepts of "authentic," "historically correct," "period proper," or a number of terms we often use- comparisons to originals in terms of raw materials, patterns, and construction methods is the first question to be asked. When it comes to price, if one does not get beyond those above, even "free" does not hack it in this segment of the CW Community. Curt-Heinrich Schmidt, AC Forum Moderator.

You get what you paid for, and if that's @#$%, well, you bought it. The A.V. list has good makers. If you're trying to portray something right, then look to the Approved Vendors, if you're not, be ready to stand next to the first guy that walks up to you during an event with a nylan uniform. :sarcastic

Mr. Stillwagon, or any other mods,
This topic is continually beat to death. At least once a week, someone posts a question about a non-approved vendor. I am not blaming you for this. Being a moderator is not an easy job, nor is it one which pays your bills. At this point can't it become policy to tell the member who makes such a post to use the approved vendor list, then lock the thread. I don't mean to be a pain, but I think everyone is tired of say to these people to use the approved vendor list, most of all the moderators. Keep up the good work fellas.

Hear! Hear!

Perhaps it could be made a policy that only posts/questions concerning approved vendors and their wares are allowed. Questions about other vendors can be posted on other forums. That could be put in the forum rules. But, from a lot of the posts that are put on here by the fresh fish, it is readily apparent that those rules are rarely read, so maybe that wouldn't work after all.

Hallo Kameraden!

I was of a similar persuasion when I saw this post, and was surprised when I read the last two replies.

While I highly applaud and compliment the desire and comittment of "Newcomers" progressively striving to learn, grow, and evolve-

IMHO, this "type" of posting concerning Run of the Mill Vendors, Brand X Sutlers, and Skinner Row Businesses are replacing "Who makes the best Widget?" type posts.

There are reasons there are Approved Vendors, and why they appear on the Approved Vendor List.

And there are other fora where the wares of Run of the Mill Vendors, Brand X Sutlers, and Skinner Row Businesses well meet the needs and wants of different segments of the CW Community.

But Kameraden, it AIN'T here.

While I appreciate the desire, spirit, and intent of the questions asked about Non-Approved Vendors, "let's get beyond this."

There are reasons there are Approved Vendors, and why they appear on the Approved Vendor List.

Please use the Approved Vendors List, and the Approved Vendors. (or ask those questions on the boards and fora that utilize their products and services.)

And thanks to all those whose replies helped salvage this.
