Looks like a fold in his britches and the resulting shadow to me. I feel let down; I even popped popcorn!

Remnant of a tobacco twist?
If it's an anatomical part of the fellow, he needs to seek medical assistance . . . :confused_

Tobacco twist sounds likely.
What about....
A fancy handle of a small Derringer?
A coin purse?
A handkerchief?

OT:
Dear Dave:
Tried to send you private email but could not off this site. Are you descended from the VA/MS Egglestons? I am an Eggleston descendant and wonder if you know Dr. Robert Eggleston of Harrisonburg, Va and Bryan Baine formerly of Fairfax, Va now of Appomattox CH, VA. I have been working with them on the family history. Please contact me off forum to reply.
Thanks!

Oh boy, this reminds me of that old Mae West one-liner, "Is that a [fill in the blank] in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?" :wink_smil
Mirthfully yours,
Mark Jaeger

Everyone, I appreciate the tact with which this discussion has been handled, and give kudos for not stepping past the bounds of propriety with the veiled and not-so-veiled comments.
However, the discussion really doesn't have a great deal of... well, worth in increasing knowledge about the time period, beyond amusing speculation, so I'll go ahead and close it now.
If anyone has questions or comments, please pop me a quick private message, or use the alert button to bring it back to my attention.
