Hello Gentlemen. I was looking around on eBay and found this photo of a Federal soldier. The photo shows him in a frock coat, with shoulder straps.
I haven't seen this before and was curious to know what type of frock coat would've had shoulder straps on it. If anyone could help me out with this that would be great. Thank you all in advance.

Hi,
Hard to tell but, assuming the man was Pennsylvanian, he might have served in the Pennsylvania Reserves--the coat might be state-issue or even private-purchase. You might want to look in the standard works (e.g., "Todd's") to see what they say about uniformage issued to Keystone State troops.
Knowing the provenance of this image could be half the battle. If you can find out where it came from, you might be able to nail down the possible units in which this man served.

Do the sleeves have chevron cuffs with trim? I cannot tell but the fit certainly does not look like a standard issue frock. Has anyone asked the seller for more info?

No, I haven't asked the seller for any info yet. I don't have an ID on eBay, so I don't have any real way to contact the person. They just state in the description that it's an enlisted man's frock, and the location of the seller is in beautiful Pittsburgh, PA :), so I do agree with Mark in saying that this is a Pennsylvania soldier more than likely. I'll look into the Pennsylvania state issue jackets and see what I can come up with. Thanks again!
