I was just looking at Past Pattern's men's pants pattern and had a few questions about material and construction. I'm just looking to make a versitale pair of pants to wear during the next season, and I thought I needed to start now.

I wanted to order my fabric at the same time I ordered the pattern, but the site doesn't have any fabric suggestions listed. I want to make a pair of pants that would be appropriate for a working class impression north or south. I know jeans is appropriate for work clothes, but is it appropriate for the summer pants pattern? Is there one particular color that is right for work clothes? What of the marl cloth listed on Family Heirloom Weavers' page? Is that more "everyday" fabric than work fabric?

I know I need to do some more research, but I figured this would take me a while, so I wanted to get started now.

Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.

Family Heirloom Weavers wool checked trouser fabric would be good too. Since you are trying to make a pair of trousers that would be appropriate for a northern or southern civilian I would personally choose either a wool, satinette, or cassimere. You also said these were for work trousers. What kind of work? Hard outside labor would require a trouser made of a sturdier fabric than say trousers used for work in a factory.

Brian,

Cassimere was one of my top choices. I'm going for a "rural" impression, but not neccessarilly as a farmer. Does that make sense?

Thanks for the input.

Adam,
FHW "Marl" cloth is a relatively light weight fabric. I would classify it was more "everyday" as opposed to a "work".

Adam,

I have bought and used Past Patterns men's trouser pattern. On the back of the envelope containing the pattern is a great deal of information. A close up photo of the fabric of the original trouser fabric the pattern was drawn from is shown, as well as the photos of the original back buckle and buttons, to aid in finding suitable reproductions. Suggested fabrics as well as a source for repro buttons is also listed. I have had good luck using their patterns, and I am still somewhat of a novice. Good luck.

I just recieved the exact same pattern in the mail yesterday, and I will be working on it within the next month. I would love for you to post any more information as you progress, or a photo of the finished product.

Thanks
Corey
