Medicated Paper

My other half posted this to another forum and didn't get a response, so I thought I would try here.

Does anyone know where I could find a picture of an original box of "Gayetty's medicated paper", circa: 1857? Also the dimensions of the original boxes would be most helpfull.

No joy on your request for images BUT having read a flyer for this product in An American Time Capsule I was horrified to learn of the injurious and deadly poisons found in printed material (the ones that people foolishly "apply to a particularly tender portion of the body." I am resolved to only use pure, safe material, designed for this specific purpose.

Who would not favor something that "is elegant and pure." As well as one that is "proven beyond doubt to be the finest and purest paper ever made from Manila hemp, and four grand medicines incorporated with the pulp render it a sure cure and preventive of piles"? All for two bits per 500 sheet pack.

I wonder what the medications are. I hear that one was aloe — but I wouldn't bet the farm on that being true.

Not withstanding the 1,000 sheets for a Dollar, (each sheet watermarked with his name, by the way), and the seemingly "non-harmful" substances contained in the paper, why did his invention fail? And why didn't commercial toilet paper rolls appear until 1867?

Do you carry a pack of medicated wet wipes with you today, or do you use the regular toilet paper that you grew up using?

If what you've always used doesn't cause a problem, why change?

Well, I use regular tp or a handkerchief that I don't mind tossing. Wet wipes dry out if exposed to the air. Maybe that's the reason.
