Can we send a check or MO in the mail? I'm not a big PayPal fan and rarely (thanks, Matt and Mssr Ramsey) use credit cards anymore.

Paul, and all others.
Yes, you certainly can send a check or money order. Make it payable to "The Watchdog." Send it to The Watchdog, PO BOX 1675, Warren, MI 48090-1675.
CRRC2 status:
1. John Tobey and I have reviewed approved the final proof copy.
2. We have 275 orders and need 225 more. I am confident that we will reach the 500 pre-paid order goal in the next three to four weeks--particullarly if folks on this forum can spread the word. Based on that confidence, I have instructed the printer to start the presses. It will take about four weeks (with the holiday) for printing, binding and the ink to dry.

The Columbia Rifles Reserach Compendium update as of 16 January 2007:
The book is currently being printed and bound. It will take about ten more days to complete the process (the ink has to dry!) I am expect pick up the books by the 27th of January and will ship them to those who have pre-paid orders on hand as soon as I can get them packaged.
We currently have 275 pre-paid retail orders. We needed 500 to cover the printing costs, but I decided to put up the balance out of my pocket (a loan to the WD).
Shipment to the UK and Europe (or anywhere in the world) depends on tthe weight of the book (close to four pounds) and the destination. We can ship by air (4-7 days ) or surface (3 to six weeks). The USPS has a postage calculator at their web site. There is no "media mail" service for overseas mailing.
Thanks for your patience.

Hallo!
By way of discussion...
Is this just a pre-publication lack of interest that will pass when physical copies can be found at vendors and perused and browsed, before purchasing- or are the low numbers more "indicative" of other thngs?
Meaning, if there are 3,000-4,000 "members" of the AC Board why are there only 275 orders??
Curt

Excellent point, Mssr Schmidt.
What's taking some of us so long to belly up to the table?
I took care of some other end-of-the-year bills first (blame Nicky's manifesto or Matt's boss, I guess) and let this purchase slide. No more delay, I say!
Absolutely no good excuse not to have this volume on our personal and unit library shelves. I will rectify this next week on payday -- Bill, watch for my promised check -- and will encourage others to do the same.
It will be easier to pimp this book with a copy to show off, I guess.
I look forward to benefitting from these lads' research. Was just looking at the first edition CRRC yesterday. Now I've got to re-tackle PIE and some selected tomes in preparation for that little stroll in Louisiana this spring.
Best regards,

Well, Curt.
I had the same thought.
I think it is embarrassing for the community abroad that more than 10%-30books were ordered from Germany!!!!
Everybody who has ever held the 1st vol. in his hands just has to buy the second!!

While I pre-ordered I think that sales will pick up once the book is readily available. It's the "instant gratification" thing... Never saw the first edition but from the great things I heard about it I am really looking forward to the second edition.

The good news:
The CRRC2 will be delivered to me tomorrow (Wednesday, 23 January 2007) by the printer. I will do my best to ship all pre-publication orders by Monday. Mind you that Media Mail does take at least a week.
The additional good news is that until we recive 500 pre-publication orders, the pre-publication price will stand. As of tonight, we have 270 orders in hand--so there is still a chance to get a break on the price.
I appreciate everyone's patiance and support. Remember that all of the net profits from the sale of this book go to preservation efforts as the CR boys have earmarked their half for preservation.
Also be on the look out for a special deal for Craig Barry's The Civil War Musket on eBay in about a week.

Not sure if the sinks is the right place for this, but wasn't sure where else it would fit. Anyhow, I've had the privalge of getting one of the first copies of the Columbia Rifles Research Compendium (helps living a couple of miles from the publisher). And I'd like to be the first to say it is well worth the cost. I've read about half of it so far and I am very impressed. All the articles give a great overview of most of the things needed to improve an impression. And there is enough information to start further research if desired.
I commend the Columbia Rifles and the Watchdog for all their hard work in putting this together and getting it out to us. For all those who do not have their copy ordered, I strongly suggest you order one soon. Once these start hitting the reenacting community they will not be around long.

For what it's worth, the 2nd Edition is significantly different than the 1st Edition. Among other things, the 2nd Ed. has 83 chapters each covering a different subject, and the 1st Ed. had 51 chapters. More than that, however, the 2nd Ed. has:
A number of corrections to topics covered in the 1st Ed.
Some topics covered in the 1st Ed. remain, but are now covered with an all-new chapter, which is usually more in-depth than the comparable chapter in the 1st Ed. For example, my old "Knapsack and Haversack Packing 101" chapter is replaced with a new, two-chapter treatment on assembling and putting together a complete "campaign kit" by John Tobey. John's old chapter titled, "How to Salute" (1.5 pages) is replaced with the much longer and in-depth article, "Basic Honors to be Paid by the Troops" by yours truly.
The "opinion pieces" have largely been removed to accomodate more research-oriented articles.
The 2nd Ed. is significantly longer (more pages) than the 1st Ed.
A few chapters/topics in the 1st Ed. weren't all that good, or not that popular based on the feedback forms rec'd (and there were hundreds of them sent in) so a few topics covered in the 1st Ed. are absent from the 2nd Ed. For example, the chapter on "possessions of soldiers killed at Gettsyburg".
A lot more effort went into the 2nd Ed. than the 1st, and we hope it shows. :)

The CRRC2 is now in stock. All orders as of 29 January 2007 have been shipped (most of them going by Media Mail, which will take about a week). A customer in Massachusetts and one in Virginia report that they recived their copies today, which were mailed from Michigan on Thursday.
Since only half the desired 500 pre-publication orders were received, I will keep the pre-publication price in effect until at least 15 February 2007 (details in a previous post).
Yes, I will ship books worldwide.
Please contact me about multiple copy shipping rates.
I will have the CRRC2, Craig Barry's The CW Musket and a few remaining copies of Patrick Reardon's Making Cartridges (a second printing has been ordered) at the Reenactor Fest (http://www.reenactorfest.com) in Chicago this coming weekend.

It ain't just fer th'dustbeaters boys....
As expected, like the loose leaf 1st edition, this one is chock FULL of outstanding info and tips for improving one's impression, branch irrespective. At 437 pages its not for the knapsack, won't fit into the ammunition chest OR battery wagon, and you probably won't devour it in one sitting. Personally I plan to graze on its contents for some days, perhaps weeks, to come. I learned a great deal from, and still refer to, the original. This revised, expanded, and impoved iteration promises to be even more valuable to me, and those who pillage my library.
While I've yet to find any artillery specific sections (hey, I only got it last night!!), there are numerous quotes from Billings. Lets never let 'em forget that our dustbeater bretheren rely heavily on an artilleryman's words to build their impressions!! Likewise we can learn a lot about soldiering from this volume, slanted as it is towards those we like to think of as targets...
Just like cannoneers were predominantly citizens prior to donning a uniform for whichever cause, a soldier's experiences have great commonality, regardless of which sorta weapon they serve. Our marching may be easier, unfettered by accoutrements and muskets, but we still shoulder our knapsacks, fill our canteens and check our haversacks, as we follow the guns into action. Granted our workload, with horses, harness, vehicles, to say nothing of the pieces themselves, makes for a longer day with less sleep (and better men), but I'll cheerfully trade all that labour to not tote a rifle, even a few dusty steps!!!
Of 84 articles, only a dozen or so are infantry specific, ALL the rest apply to our cannoneers, gunners, Sergeants and officers. Even some literate cavalry folks will find the substantial research appealing. Most, if not all, drivers will doubtless hafta have this material read to them, but even then the schoolin' may prove beneficial, though slowly and painfully gleaned...
Even the infantry heavy articles will increase our knowledge and further our impressions, no bad thing. A soldier is always a soldier, duties, details, and organization run his life, though the specifics may differ. There's no Confederate content here either, but what a companion volume(s) that could be!!
Its early yet for a full book report, but I wanted to strongly urge my redleg comrades to step up NOW and add this one to your library. This edition's printing is already over half sold...
Do Not Wait, Buy Today!!
And READ it dammit, don't just stick it on the shelf. You won't regret it.
Thanks to all who contributed, compiled, edited and otherwise made this resource possible.
personal note: I have no connection whatsoever with CRRC II or WatchDog Quarterly other than being a very satisfied customer. I will, however consider any proffered bribes...

As of today (8 February 2007) we have sold about 310
copies at the pre-publication retail price of $35 plus $3 shipping (Media Mail). We have sold just over one hundred at wholesale (the wholesale price will increase slightly after 28 February).
I have about 500 copies of the CRRC2 in stock. The pre-publication price will only remain in effect for the next ten days--after which the price will be $39.95 plus shipping.
All orders as of 6 February have been shipped. Media Mail (or Bound Printed Matter) may take as long as a week. If you ordered a book before 31 January 2007, it should have arrived. If not contact me at thedog@watchdogreview.com.
I am very pleased with the book's reception in our community. I would very much like to do a Confederate infantry compendium and I am soliciting ideas for content and articles. Craig Barry will be the Watchdog Quarterly point-person for this project until a general editor (or editors) is selcted.

I really appreciate the genorosity, but i am sure that there are other servicemembers that are not as financially well off who can't afford the compendeum. (plus my parents already bought it for my birthday)
thank you once again everyone on the forums are very supportive,

Immediately upon her arrival home, my child bride absconded with the darn thing, so I won't see it for a few days.
Mine came yesterday, my jaw dropped, and I proceeded to allow self-hypnotism to commence. My child bride would have "absconded with the darn thing", but for different reasons. It seems I'm not much use to her with this thing around.

Really am enjoying the second incarnation of CRRC -- much improved paper stock really helps the illustrations -- now I can see what the authors are talking about in the articles about hats and haircuts, for examples -- and the new stories are superb, such as Curt's musings on authenticating muskets, &tc.
Now, I'm not a conspiracy buff, but did anyone else notice that CRRC2 fits exactly side by side with the soft cover version of EOG ??? Coincidence or … just funnin, this new reference goes alongside the best of research, regardless of dimensions IMHO.
Thanks for all the hard work in putting this together. Now it's up to us to apply this information on the field. If you haven't bought yours, yet, get off the fence, lads!
Regards,
Paul Hadley
What I like the most is having everything there in one place - not having to search for a particular book, magazine, web page, etc.
My only disappointment is that the binding gave up the ghost after a week.

Rob,
I am concerned about the binding. Exactly what happened? Did individual pages come loose, or did the binding separate from the cover? Please e-mail me at thedog@watchdogreview.com.

I had individual pages come loose toward the middle of the book. I found most of the pages pulled free pretty easily as if the glue wasn't totally dry. I ended up disassembling the whole thing, using a three hole punch and putting the whole book in a three ring binder. Doesn't seem like a big deal to me, I kind of like it better this way.
I have been in touch with Bill on this, and will be sending it back so that he can show it to the printer.

I echo Mr. Schaffner's comments. Thank you for the trust you place on those of us in this hobby and I have sent my order. Of course, "the check is in the mail."

I showed the printer a copy that had come apart (around page 260). There was nothing unusual in the binding process on this copy. His concusion was that out of every thosuand copies this may occur in a few copies. The reasons may be:
1. It is a thick book.
2. It may see "hard service" from particularly enthusiastic readers such as found here.
3. The books went through printing and delivery in the midst of drastic temperature changes here in Michigan.
He provided me with a few extra replacement copies at no charge.
The bottom line from my standpoint:
1. I will monitor the situation and continue to inspect each copy before it is shipped.
2. I will replace defective copies at no cost as long as they are returned to me.
3. I suggest the three-hole punch method as an alternative (I did this to my working copy in the office anyway) primarily because the net profits from all the sales goes to preservation.

The Compedium is well worth the money. It makes one re-think of all the things which we consider to be 'accurate' and what actually should be considered hardcore.

Just received my copy. I can't remember the last time I had 437 pages of sheer living history fun-ness arrive on my doorstep.
Great work, fellas. It really is something you should be proud of.

This is truly a monumental effort to help move the hobby forward - kudoes to the folks who labored long and hard to make it happen. Some might argue that much of the info is already available other places...but human nature is what it is. Putting it into a single package is beyond valuable. It will simply make folks better soldiers. It ought to be a great impetus for some to do further research on their own, and as long as subsequent editions are planned to update it as new info is discoverd, this publication will continue to answer the call.
Well done!!

Talk about damning with faint praise. Well, it is pretty good for a unit handbook. :D

Not what I meant at all (faint praise) - the research is based on primary sources and artifacts, and is in fact available should anyone have nothing to do for a year but dig, collate and publish. It is great stuff - perhaps a better word than "much" would have been "some."
There are so many pearls in here that it is fun to actually consult it as one would an internet search...but it gets you off the net and into the real world in context- something I support 100%.
A pard asked me the other day the true mystery of life, which is:
"So how do you put a Springfield rifle sling on the rifle?"
I was happy to tell him to consult the CRRC.
Its a whole hobby handbook...and a CS equivalent would be outstanding.

From the Hardcracker Handbook to Columbia Rifles Compendium and now the second edition, I am psyched! I have been out of the loop quite sometime with my training at Ft. Benning since October. I had no idea that the second edition was in production and now it is in print. I just wished I knew this with the pre-production price! :cry_smile Well, that's what happens when your out of the loop for six months.

I got mine and it is great. I especially love the chaoters dealing with nationality impressions and knowing what a citizen soldier knew then. It was so detailed as to include common phrases of the day. What a great resource. A must have for even mainstreamers who just love research.
