Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone has any news of the progress of the authentic cav event/get together that there was quite a discussion on the old board before it went down???I am talking about the one that was supposed to be near the Kentucky/Tennesse border. I believe it was scheduled for March 12-14 or something near that????

Just curious and looking forward to it.

Alright, I'll take the bait since it seems no one else seems willing......

Some background: this type event has been kicked around for years. In its present manifestation it was conjured up and discussed among several veteran cavalry reenactors some time last year or so. Sometime last spring or summer it seemed to take on the objective of a "possibility". We (John Nolan, Coley Adair's Critter's, the 7th Tennessee and several others) originally thought about having it as a spring pre-reenactment season event. The idea and location (Tennessee) was further bantered about privately and on this forum (before the crash).
At Perryville this fall I undertook to discuss it at length with several reenactment groups that were in attendence. At the Nashville Civil WAr Show a few weeks ago we held a meeting of about 8-9 people representing several units from east and west. The consensus there was "general" that an event like this was an excellent idea for sharing information, learning and organizing. We all thought it should contain some agenda of "education (seminars), drill and organization"...the details of which are still being explored and developed.
We also thought it best to open it up to anyone who wants to come, ie. Federal Confederate, east, west and Trans-Mississippi (with some very few restrictions) asking only that those that attend be "male", "mounted" and (most important), bring a good attitude for learning, sharing etc. (Note *** below).
It was decided that the original March 07 dates were impossible due to schedule conflicts and the short time frame. Therefore, a July 07 date is now being developed.
At this writing the location is tentativly still at a large, very horse friendly place in Tennessee. Coley Adair is corresponding with several people and unit commanders about location and agenda details but nothing is concrete yet.
Sorry, not more information is available. Nothing secret here. Its just that we have been exploring first, the interest, second the feasability and third, the "how/who" to put it together.

That's the facts, now....

*** In my opinion (mine and others), we in the mounted cavalry NEED to be less adversarial, more open minded and certainly more organized if we are to survive. Its expensive and hard enough to do mounted cavalry when dealing with narrow minded, short sighted infantry commanders and event organizers without also fighting among ourselves. It just getting too expensive and difficult to do anymore. Issues of Yanks, Confederates, "eastern vs western" "main-stream vs authentics", "us vs them" is as old as reenacting but must be set aside if we are to survive and more importantly, ENJOY events while honoring those that we portray.
I suggest anyone interested in helping and, units that are interested in attending, contact Coley now, while individuals stay tuned to this forum and other means of communication for more information.

Pat, (present company excluded)....
While I did not mean to offend anyone, perhaps the word "ignorant" or "indifferent" is more appropriate. The fact is, "most" (not all) infantry commanders and event organizers know little (and often care to know little more) about proper, effective use of cavalry. Not just for historical accuracy but for fullfillment of the particpants. Nothing new here, this is a common complaint among cavalry reenactors.

Ken,

No hard feelings! I read that and thought it was just too good an opportunity to make a good natured/friendly comment!

You know I am behind this event 100%! I'd like to think I could participate. Maybe I may make it. If not, I suppose I'll just have to stay a "narrow minded infantry (ex) commander." :tounge_sm

Sorry! That is just way to fun!

Is this event still in the works? I'd like to go, but some of us are going to need as much time in advance to plan as possible. I still think it's one of the best ideas anyone has had in a long time.

Guys if worst come to worst Land Between the Lakes might be a possibility for large area... and it isn't central but Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis has a bunch of open area... not the best options but options none the less we are keeping open minds and gathering to learn not a EFUBU 100% emersion event... Zack,

Thank you for the offer and your interest. Actually, there has been alot of behind the scenes efforts being made and at this time we have considerable details already in place. We expect to make a formal public announcement of the event next week. Keep tuned. Thank you! Ken R Knopp

I deleted several incredibly unproductive posts that would be better off continued over on some other forum where "us vs. them" has practically been raised to an art form. Folks who care to continue the discussion and move the topic forward are encouraged to do so.
