There have been some articles on improvised winter clothing, such as the blanket overcoat, and below is a photo of another route to take when an overcoat isn't available. Just layer up! In what has to be a rather ungainly get-up, this soldier has got his sack coat tucked into his trousers (which almost look like they're backwards), layered over by his unbuttoned state jacket.

From the LOC, LC-DIG-cwpb-04100.

Has anyone run into any other interesting accounts of various other ways soldiers dealt with the cold when supplies were thin or otherwise unavailable?

One of the best examples of improvised winter clothing I have seen was a greatcoat that is in the collection of the small Civil War Museum in Hamilton, NJ (Camp Olden?). In the collection they have a greatcoat, where the soldier basically hacked off the cape, and added pockets, presumably with the cape material. It is a good example of personal tailoring as well. I can't recall if it was an infantry or mounted coat.

Cheers.

The comments and analysis of that photo on the Hard Case Boys website and forum lives in infamy. Just seeing that image again makes me laugh.
