I thought at one time I had read an article before the crash of the proper ways to tie a cravat. I may be wrong though. If anyone could direct me or to a suitable source of information it would be greatly appreciated.

There are as many ways to tie a cravat as you can think of ranging from huge bows that make you look like a kitten on christmas, to nearly completely modern windsor knots.
There is a good book published in the late 20's, unfortunately it is only sold bundled with another book these days which makes it a bit pricey. YOu can check it out here.

Start going through the LOC and ebay Dag auctions, there are lots of good cravat images out there. Ive attached to photos for oppisite ends of the cravat sprectrum (size wise anyway) just for fun.

James,
Check with the old timers in your reenacting unit to see if you can borrow (or buy) a copy of that old reenacting classic, 101 Ways to Tie a Cravat. It used to be a staple (no pun intended) in the papergoods section of most general purpose sutlers.

There's a non-approved vendor who sells just the cravat tying reprint by itself for a very low price
