I am forming a Federal Infantry Company for the Battle of Resaca (http://www.georgiadivision.org/bor_reenactment.html) event being held on May 18-20 in Resaca Georgia. This is a mainstream event that is being sponsored by the Georgia Division. The company I am forming with assistance from members of the 10th Texas, GA Stateline, and others will be a campaigner company.
For this event we will be portraying Co. K of the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The 7th Ohio was formed in 1861 and for many of it's original members the Battle of Resaca was their last action before being discharged from service. The 7th Ohio was in 2nd Brigand which was part of the XX Army Corp (White stars). At the time of Resaca Co. K had only 33 members with 1/3 of those being officers and NCOs. So we have a chance to have an authentically sized company. If we do get more that end up with more than 33 folks registered for the company, I may change the Company we portray to match the numbers as closely as possible.
Registration for this company is $10.00 ($6.00 for the event + $4.00 for rations) for those mailing in their registration and $11.00 for those using PayPal (PayPal charges us to use their service) before May 1, 2007. Late registration (Received after May 1) is $15.00 for those mailing in their registration and $16.00 for those using PayPal. The deadline for registration for this company to recieve rations is May 10. The event does allow onsite registration. However anyone registering on site will not be guaranteed rations. If rations are available you will need to pay the $4.00 to cover your part. Please, everyone try to register before the deadline and don’t wait until the last minute, so we can have an accurate count. Registration fees may be paid with a Money Order, PayPal (see link below) or Check.
A webpage has been set up for those wishing to register for this company along with a discussion forum. Please direct all discussion concerning this event and this company to that forum. Here are the links:

I'll talk to my boys about it, Tripp. We do that one every year and I think my guys would be psyched about it. I'll let you know what they say. Who knows, you might have just gained 7 or 8 guys.

This event also tends to be one of the few times each year that Joe Blount takes his goods on the road. We had a dandy time unloading excess gear in his side yard last year, and I met a feller from back up in the hills that could talk dyepots with me.

Count me in Tripp, I will be Federal for River's Bridge, Banks Grand Retreat, Shiloh LH and I will add this one as well, looks to be a good year. Considering Perryville as Federal and I will revert back to being a Confederate in 2008.

Sounds like it might be fun and it's not a bad drive for me. I find the Atlanta campaign to be pretty fascinating, plus I'd be willing to bet an event like this can always use all the Federals it can get.

Good Idea Tripp... My folks live in south Atlanta, so I guess I could kill two birds with one stone for this event. It would be nice to have a good sized "hardcore" unit at an event like Resaca, and from the looks of things we should be able to do just that.
I might be able to convince seven or eight like-minded fellers to make the drive with me.

Tripp,
A little historical addendum for clarification. The 7th Ohio was in Colonel Charles Candy's 1st Brigade of Brigadier General John W. Geary's Second Division (White Star) 20th Army Corps. The 7th Ohio mustered out on June 11, 1864 so their last major engagement was the Battle of New Hope Church May 25, 1864 and the skirmishing along the Dallas - New Hope line until June 5, 1864.
It was Geary's Division along with Ward's Brigade of Butterfield's Division that took Van Den Corput's Battery at Resaca.
I hope to make this one.

Go to http://search.live.com and search for the 7th Ohio and you will find both of their Regimentals, one at over 600 pages. The 7th was a very hard luck unit, they lost 13 of their 14 officers at Ringgold Gap on Nov 27th, 1863. In fact, that was their breaking point, they felt betrayed by the higher ups and never got over it. Gotta love a bunch thats battle cry was to crow like roosters.

Gotta love a bunch thats battle cry was to crow like roosters.
Back when we did the Outpost event in 2000, the Federal impression was the 7th Ohio, and somebody had made up some replicas of the little brass rooster badges that the regiment wore. There's a picture of an original rooster badge in one of Baumgartner & Strayer's Echoes of Battle books, I believe the Chattanooga volume.
Does anyone know if these are still available, or maybe interested in running off another batch? It would be a nice touch...

The Cecil Bros. seemed to have a good supply of those little cocks over the years. Not sure what their source of supply would have been back then.

Do any of you have any of the information that was used for Outpost and the 7th Ohio?

Those brass roosters came from S&S firearms, not all of them men sported them though and some just cut out a rooster profile from felt like a corps badge. Check out those two regimentals that I posted about, some good images of men wearing them there.

I have posted the guidelines for the Federal Campaigner Company I am forming for Resaca on the website. I have not been able to uncover exactly what uniforms and equipment the 7th Ohio had at the Battle of Resaca. What we do know is the they were completely reequipped the month before the Battle. This means their gear would have been in relatively good condition at the time of the Battle. It also means that military issue items such as shirts, socks, and knapsacks should be predominate as opposed to civilian items.
The guidelines I posted are based on research done for past events that represented other historical events that occurred in around the time frame of the Battle of Resaca. The items should be made using historically correct patterns and are listed in order of preference.

Thanks, Tripp,
I've got it linked on the 56th forum. I have polled everybody in my company and each seems really positive. Hopefully registrations will be coming in soon. I really appreciate you doing this- not only as a learning opporitunity for those who have never done a true campaigner event but also to show some in the mainstream that campaigners aren't the booger-men that we are made out to be.

The overall federal command for Resaca is Hunter Poythress, commander of the Georgia Volunteer Battalion. Hunter was the overall CS commander at Prelude to Chickamauga last year. I will be the company commander for 7th Ohio campaign company we are forming for this event. However based on the level of possible support that various groups have indicated it is possible we might end up with enough folks to form two or more companies since the average company size in the 7th Ohio was historically only about 30 men at the time of Resaca.
The decision to form more than one company will depend on actual registrations recieved. We will most likely be following in with the GVB for this event. Mr. Poythress has offer us our own battalion command if we get at least three companys of 35 men or more. To be honest I do not think that is possible but then I did not think there would be level of support for this effort that has come forward.

Mr. Heath...I am NOT going to let the cat out of the bag for which color the badges should be. Folks can easily do their own research for this..... cough, WHITE, cough ok so the cat is out now.
Admiral Duffer....the infamous LBL XX Corps badge will be there on my person at Resaca.
After looking at some different pictures of corps badges in the Herb Coats Memorial Civil War Picture Library I have to say that if I had the patience and time I would shoot for making a bone corps badge. No quips about dead animal parts on hats please!

SCAR will also have some guys there to support Tripp's efforts. I know this is an adjunct to a mainstream event. But, the site is on original ground and on the actual annivesary date. I have always thought about how great it would be to improve the standards at this venue and I believe the way we start is through particpation and incremental change.

I know of three 20th Corps badges recovered from the valley in front of Van Corputs Battery. One of those I believe was Id'd to an Eric Greiner, I can't think of the unit at this moment, (his picture is in the "Echoes of Battle" series -Atlanta Campaign. ) I know the metal badges weren't as common but there was a massive number of troops massed for the attack down the valley toward the Battery.

I have managed to arrange what I think will be nice treat for those falling in with the Federal Campaigner Company being formed for Resaca. Tony Patton, a local historian and reenactor, has agreed to give a guided tour of the Resaca Battlefield on Friday night starting at 6 pm Friday evening. Tony is very active in the Friends of the Resaca Battlefield and is very knowledgeable about the battle and surrounding area. The tour will not only include the site where the event is taking place but also include near by sites and property.
Anyone falling in with the 7th Ohio will be able to take the tour. There will be no additional cost involved. My thanks to Tony for his willingness to do this for us.
We are up to 37 men registered so far for this effort. If we keep going we may have to split into to companies so we can maintain historically accurate numbers. An updated list has been posted on the efforts website.

That place is great. I'm glad you reminded me of it. And for corn. Well I can't say anything about that right now.
With all of the shenanigans we've been posting here and there I would like to point out that the Georgia Govenor, Sunny Perdue, is making a major push to preserve historic places in the state and Resaca is on that list. If I am not mistaken it is slated to become a full fledged state park, akin to Picketts Mill, in the near future. Although it does not encompass the amont of land that Picketts Mill does, it is still good that the land is being set aside for future generations.

Gentlemen,
With the successful Shiloh event behind us, I can now focus on Resaca. Things are really coming together even better than I expected. As of today, we have 47 men registered for Co. K. I am expecting we will end up with close to 60 if everyone that has contacted me does indeed register. If we do exceed 60 men, we will be splitting in to two companies in order to more accurately portray the historic numbers the 7th Ohio had at Resaca. As I mentioned before the average company had between 30 to 40 men. If we do split Jim Butler will be commanding the Second Company which will be company Co H.
Assuming we do not split our command Structure will be as follows.
Capt Tripp Corbin
1st Lt Herb Coats
2nd Lt Jim Butler
1st Sgt Kiev Thomason
Sgt Tim Arnold
Sgt Brian Hicks
Sgt Brad Quinlin
Cpl Michael Comer
Cpl Terry Hancock
Cpl Chris Henderson
Cpl Greg Krohn
We will be using Casey's Drill Manual so make sure to take the time to refresh yourself if needed especially stacking arms. It is also possible that we will end up being the skirmish company so review that as well. We want to make sure we know what we are doing. Also we will have musicians with us. This will give us a chance to practice for Chickamauga and Outpost for those attending those events.
Kiev Thomason is currently working on rations for us. We will be issuing food for Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as Sunday breakfast. These will be raw rations that you will need to cook. I am not exactly sure were we will be camping as of now since I have not gotten word where the main Federal Camp will be. It is my intention to try and camp somewhere nearby is possible.
Dave Thomas has approached me about raising another company of the 7th Ohio for this event. He believes he can raise an additional 20 to 30 man company. If he is successful, they will be company G. That means we could have a possible 3 campaigner companies. Now wouldn't that be something.
Lastly, remember this is Resaca. We are going to have fun. I intend for this to be a fairly laid back event. We will be posting some guards mainly for safety and security. Everyone will get plenty of time to visit the sutler and friends. Also do not forget about the Battlefield Tour on Friday Night. If anyone has any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

I hear there is a chance two extremely lazy and shirking privates that have not been seen in these parts since a Wood Gathering Detail may make an appearance in their not so normal rank (well rank as in insignia) free attire! Well I personally had a good time at Resaca this past weekend. I want to thank all that came out and fell in with Tripp’s company, Company K, 7th Ohio. To the SCAR folks, the Possum Skinners, the 56th Georgia, my fellow WIG members, and everyone else that made it a fun weekend thank you! Tripp and I also spoke with Hunter Poythress and David Young (commanding the Federal forces and our battalion respectively) and they let us know that they were very happy that we came out. The battles and camaraderie were fun and if we decide to do this again we will work on NOT camping next to the railroad. It was very rumbley over there.
On Sunday we were supported by and then helped out of some big time trouble by the Critter Company. Once again it was great to see infantry and cavalry working together to pin down and ultimately run the enemy off. That was a good feeling and if I might say a ‘moment’ watching Tommy, Coley, John, Patrick, Jerry, and the other Federal Cavalry launch a charge on the flanks of the Rebel formation as Tripp and Paul Jerram had our company rush forward and lay a volley into the Confederates.
And I will put this little factoid forward to my fellow AC members. Would you believe it if I said that the Federal forces outnumbered the Confederate forces at the event this past weekend? Well it is true. Yes it happened in the south, in Georgia! I went to an event that had more Federals than Confederates. I found this fact quite simply amazing.

Indeed, this weekend was a lot of fun. Wish I could have seen some of you there, but there was enough confusion as my guys didn't even show themselves (had to be adopted by the 21st MA) to try to find Tripp or anyone else.
Regardless, excellent fun, despite being completely screwed at Sunday's outset by the Confederate lodgement near the tracks!

Comrads... It was certainly worth the 9+ hour drive to serve with great bunch from Co. K. The colors and the battles were memorable especially Sunday's battle against the Rebs near the tracks. Nice to meet new people and see again familiar faces. Thanks to all who were there and who helped put this together. OHIO! OHIO!

Thanks again for everyone that supported the effort to raise a campaigner company for Resaca. It looks like we had the biggest company on the field for either side. We had a high of 52 men on Saturday and Sunday we still had 47. We ended up being one wing of the Georgia Volunteer Battalion.
Everyone kept telling me how great we looked and how well we drilled. To quote Sgt Major Boone of the GVB we helped dispell the myth that campaigners can not drill. Given the number of different units we had (Armory Guards, Possum Skinners, WIG, Salt River Rifles, 56th Ga, 30th Ga, 48th NY, 45th Al, New Madrid Guards, 63rd Tn, Elk River Boys and 21st OH) I was amazed at how quickly we were able to operate in the field as single unit. I was proud and honored to have been your captain.
Thanks to the GVB for giving us a home and for being patient with me as I learned how they opperate. Hunter Poythress did a great job as the overall federal commander. As always it was a pleasure to serve with Paul Jerram.
A special thanks to the Critters and the rest of the Federal Cav. for saving our bacon Sunday morning. That one Confederate company would have over run our platoon if y'all had not showed up.

I was in that company of Confederates that came across the tracks on your flank Sunday. It looked like we were holding our own there for a little bit with you boys. When that cavalry came upon us, it looked terrific! (or I should say terrifying!) After that, the 7th Ohio then began to kick our butts across the field and never let up.
Hope you all had a good weekend and for those that went on the tour Friday evening, I hope you enjoyed it.
Thanks,
Tony Patton

Tony,
I am so sorry I forgot to thank you for a great tour. That alone was worth the trip to the event.

Tony,
I was part of that tour group friday evening and just wanted to mention again how grateful I am for your time and energy. I still get chills thinking of that view of Van den Corput's Battery Redan. Thanks again.

Greetings all,
Truly a good weekend. Great guys all around. The leadership was great this weekend and it was good to get to know a bunch of new gentlemen. I use that word loosely as it is defined. Looking forward to seeing al again at Outpost III.
I never thought I would say it, but Ohio, Ohio, Ohio!!!!

Yep, it was good. I signed up with some mixed feelings but was very impressed by the number of Federals we had. It was a good look and ended up being a force ratio much more authentic than what I understand has been in the past.
So even though I came with some hesitation to a mainstream event, I ended up having a good time and enjoyed the camaraderie in the company.
I wonder if Landrum will wear his new kepi to Vicksburg?

Fellers,
I must say that was the best time in the field at Resaca in nearly 10yrs. A quality group took the call to arms as the 7th OVI ("Fighting Roosters"). Was good to see some old friends (even as rank as privates again) and meeting some new ones. Herb is right about the US forces outnumbering the CS....and for the firstime (I think) ever, we had to stoke up the fires for the evenings. Hats off to Tripp and Kiev for working the organization and to the rest of you who travelled whatever distance, to make this on F'ing A company. Only goes to show you that an event is what you make of it.
Thanks for the fun and see ya at another campfire.

I had a blast. It was really great to see everybody, meet new friends and put the Capt's coat in the tree. I can't wait to see you all again at Outpost in Oct. Mucho thankos to Tripp, Kiev and all the GVB staff for a great weekend- and I'm not including the hourly trains in the great part. I've got a couple of chiggers to share memories with! Ohio! Ohio! Ohio! (And this from a Georgia native)

Tripp, Kiev, et al,
It was good seeing all of you at Resaca, of course you didn't have to get quite that close when y'all marched off on Sunday from formation and almost directly into our left flank :tounge_sm . Also enjoyed the guided tour of the property on the way off the field:rolleyes:
It was good to see the appropriate numbers and a significant number of "hits" taken as well. We had a blast chasing ole johnny down that ravine and back up the hill on the other side, had the battle gone on a couple of more minutes, that battery would have been ours.
Se y'all in a couple of weeks at Picketts Mill.

I would like to echo the sentiments of all the previous posts. Personally I had about given up on this event, but being part of such great authentic contingent was something I couldn't pass up. I think it's great giving an authentic "shot in the arm" to some of these maintream events. I wish I could have been there on Sunday, but after the encouragment of my family at the last minute on Friday ( to go blow off some steam and stress) , I got back home in time to see my grandfather at his home , speak with him about the good ole' days, and an hour later he passed on. Thanks to all the great friends I have made in this hobby, in the short time I've been involved, and I look forward to seeing you all again at the Chickamuaga LH and Outpost !

Eric,
I am sorry to hear about the passing of your Grand Father but am glad you had a chance to see him before he made the final journey. I know I speak for all when I say we deeply appreciate his service to this Country. The World has lost another Hero.

Eric,
I am sad to hear of you loss. I know how much a grandfather means to a man. I know you'll miss him.
I am really glad that you got to come out this weekend. It was good to give you a hard time once again. See you in the fall. (note the possum skinner tag)

Gentlemen, thank you for the kind sentiments. It only reenforces my confidence in the character of the men, I have met on this end of the hobby. I ask everyone to take advantage of talking with their WWII vets and hearing their stories first hand. This generation is almost gone, and before long will talked about, with the same air of mythology, that we discuss the CW vets. Remember them all this Memorial Day.
(Greg, all I can say is likewise, hope you can make it out this fall )

Gents,
Tripp and Kiev you put on a great event, as usual. It's is nice to be able to go to an otherwise boring event and be able to have like minded authentic people at a mainstream event. Had a good time. Thanks again for all your hard work.
Eric sorry to hear about your loss. I met you at Prelude last year. All we can do is cherish the memories that we have and know that we'll get to see them again someday. Hope to see you soon.
