View Full Version : New Users: Important change to permissions

We've created a new usergroup for new users entitled Fresh Fish. Users will automatically go in to this usergroup when they register and will stay in this usergroup until they have 2 approved posts. All new posts & new threads which are posted by a Fresh Fish will be moderated.
That means moderators will review the content and approve/reject it before it appears on the main forums. If you make a new post as a Fresh Fish, it will not show up initially. Please don't resubmit your posts - we'll get to it as soon as we can.
The reason for this change is 1) to keep the farb crap off the forums but more importantly 2) spambots are registering on our forums at a pace of 1 in 5 new users with the intent of posting banners for viagra, cheap cell phones and XXX rated websites.
Once 2 posts have been made on the forums which have been approved by moderation, the user will automatically move in to the Recruit usergroup which grants them full posting access. At 10 posts the Recruit becomes Rank & File with increased access to uploading images, etc.
We realize that this will be an inconvenience to new, well-intentioned posters - it's also an inconvenience to moderators. It is a necessary precaution however.

Paul,
I think this is a bully concept, and one other forums should copy if they can. I know on another forum I belong to, the discussion is awesome, but the spammers post new viagra, and drug/ pornography links every day. It gets annoying after a while, and I'm glad you have taken this great step in eliminating that.

Paul,
what about for members who were members previously, but who's membership lapsed? Do you have to post a certain number of messages in a set time so that you don't lose your account? I searched the FAQs on returning and previous members, but no dice!
Thank you,

Thank you,
The software doesn't make any disctinction between new members and new members who had an account here once before.

This is a good idea. Another “board” I belong to is plagued with undesirables posting everything from frivolous advertising to pornography. This technique will be mentioned to its moderators. Hopefully, it will be as effective.

It's been pretty effective thusfar. I don't believe we've had any advertising spam actually hit the forums since we instituted this.

Paul, thanks for the explanation of the usergroups. I have been a member for a few months now but did not really know how everything worked. I am excited to continue using this site for research. I also like that I can ask for help from fellow living historians.
