Higher resolution photo?

Does anyone have a higher resolution version of this photograph? I had too much trouble with it on the LOC and after I zoom past 150% it gets blurry.

Hi!

You have to go back to the LOC and get the uncompressed TIFF version. Yep, it will take a while to download. If you are using dial-up service it may be impractical. With the tiff version I can enlarge to 400% without losing much detail to blurriness.

If someone else has a high-res version the file will probably be just as large as that on the LOC.

Does it appear like the 2 guys on the right on top of the works that their bayonets are not completely in the scabards? It looks like they are sticking out a couple of inches.

Are the logs acting as buttresses or are those Quaker guns? I was thinking Quaker guns because the visible ends don't appear to be pushed into the ground to act as a buttress.. (Maybe I should have read the title that says "with Quaker guns").

The soldier standing on the far right (near the napping one) has what looks like a coffee pot or really big cup on a pretty full haversack.

Good observations. I noticed that the bayonets are too long for their scabbards. From the fat haversacks it does look they've just gotten a ration issue.

Now -- what does the man seated on the log in the foreground have on his hat? It looks like a flower, but given that nearly half the men are wearing greatcoats, it was likely not the right season. I looked real hard at it and I don't think it's a splotch on the photo.

The man lying on the right, is that a dead federal? He certainly looks pretty well "put together" for a battle casualty. Plus it is odd that a dead soldier would be lying there in this photo. He certainly looks living to me. It almost looks like he is staring into a hole in the ground. Any ideas?

When I zoomed in on the uncompressed tiff, it looked like a flower or even a cockade type flower. But I couldn't get in tight enough to tell though.

Also looks like we have some different companies in there. I saw an I and D with what look like a 95 or 90.

Also what is the emblem on the top of the cap of the soldier standing behind the one with the "flower" on his cap.

The emblem in question on the top of the man's cap is a Hardee hat pin, put to decorative use. The troops in question are with the 95th Pennsylvania (Gosline's Zouaves). The reason the bayonets are protruding is that they are four sided Austrian bayonets which do not fit the issue Springfield bayonet scabbards. This photo has been discussed in a previous thread.
