Forum: In the Van: Trailing Kirby Smith - August 1-7, 2010

Crossville, Tennessee - In August, 1862 General E. Kirby Smith’s Army marched from Tennessee to link up with Braxton Bragg's invasion of Kentucky. Crossing the Cumberland Mountains, Smith assigned Ledbetter’s Brigade of Heth’s Division to assist the Army’s trains. During the move they encountered Unionist “Bushwhackers”, mountainous terrain, bad roads and inclement weather. We are recreating one brigade’s trains in General Smith’s Army.

  1. Hurry Up Boys

If you haven't registered you've got about a week. There's room for more soldiers as I understand and the more the merrier. There was a lot of talk after BGR and ITPW about how it was great to do an extended event and get the feel for campaigning. And, it certainly was. Well, here's your...

  5. The Campaign continues 14 August 1862...

During their march with Kirby Smith's wagon train, the 57th Georgia stopped briefly near Clinton, TN. There were a large number of men genuinely sick and many feigning illness after the ardous march and the prospect of crossing the Cumberland Mountains weighed heavily on the men. From Page 34...

  7. The campaign begins: August 1862

Just to whet your appetite a bit, a glimpse at how the Kentucky Campaign began for Leadbetter's Brigade of Heth's Division: Jim Kuglar was a member of the 56th Georgia, another new regiment in the same brigade as the 57th Georgia. Kuglar later wrote of the beginning of the Kentucky Campaign: ...

  8. Flintlocks at ITV

Will flintlocks be allowed at this event? If so, will there be limitations put on their use? My Knox volley gun hasn't seen the light of day for a long time.

  9. Powder and caps available where in Nashville area?

I typically ship my powder, caps and weapon via UPS when I travel east. Due to increased shipping costs, I'm considering purchasing powder and caps there. I'll likely fly into Nashville. Where in the vicinity can powder and caps generally be purchased to fill my already prepared tubes?

  10. How I spent my summer vacation ...

I've heard some background noise about this event and the summer heat. It goes without saying that August is hot. However, I don't think it will be as hot as everyone anticipates it to be. In the middle of a particularly cold, snowy winter, August must seem like Hades and the surface of the Sun...

  11. In The Van, August 1-7, 2010: Wagon School AAR

I had fun, how about you? When you get really lucky in life, one good thing teaches another and another. What we are finding on the ramp-up for In The Van, is the repeated opportunity to learn and practice common skills of the mid-19th century: this weekend the task was to begin training for...

  12. infantry uniform guidlines

So the event guidlines call for the infantry company to be wearing mainly civilian clothing. However I was discussing the topic with a few others and they were under the assumption that these soldiers would have returned from their 30 day furlough in their original militia uniforms. These would...

  15. In The Van Aug 1-7 2010 Listserver open

Well now, we never expected to have a folder for this thing. And a right fair portion of the recruiting for this event was already in place before Gerry Barker put up the initial announcement. But, since its here, a little commentary is in order on what this Authentic Campaigner 2010 Event...
