I was wondering if an officer's sash would be worn with a shell jacket. I've seen some worn underneath an open one.
Thanks,

I know offhand of at least one image of an Ohio officer wearing a buttoned shell with a sash outside the jacket. I would guess the best way to answer this is to look at original images and see what they did. But as I said I know of at least one instance.

I would suggest going through the Library of Congress' "Prints and Photographs Online Catalog" to find your answer. Although the 164th New York Infantry is a zouave unit and did not specify, you can definitely tell that many of the officers are wearing sashes. I found this photo after only a few pages of searching. Hope this helps, and here is the link for the LOC: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/pphome.html

I have also added a photo of an officer from the 1st New York Light Artillery.
