    Re: Three Generals in camp

    Dusty,

Yes, the fellow standing second from right is "Uncle John" Sedgwick. This photo was taken near Brandy Station, Va. during the winter of 1863-1864. Sedgwick's headquarters was at "Farley," the Welford/Stearns home, which was only about a mile north of Meade's headquarters, which was located on a small knoll east of Fleetwood Hill.

I don't know who the other general is, but I'll see if I can't figure it out.

By the way, for a good overview of the Union winter camps in Culpeper County, see Clark B. Hall's "Season of Change: The Winter Encampment of the Army of the Potomac, December 1, 1863 - May 4, 1864" in Blue & Gray Magazine , Volume VIII, Issue 4 (Spring 1991).

The fellow at far right, to Sedgwick's left, is General Robert O. Tyler, commanding the Reserve Artillery for the AoP.

    Compare to this photo:

Great damn ''overcoat'' in the center. The one at the far left left looks like AEF foul-weather gear. Jason can you zoom in on these two guys?

It looks like Sedgwick is standing right next to Tyler:

Here's a studio image of Tyler:

It looks like the 18 button front jackets were popular on the staff (what a pain in the ... )!

    Jason,

If you don't mind, could you zoom in on the left hand side of the photo and give us a close up of the officer wearing the overcoat?

    Thanks Jason,
